Devious Minds Release Day Blitz, Excerpt & Giveaway!

Devious Minds
(A Shelby Nichols Adventure Series #8)
by Colleen Helme

Blurb:

It’s been almost a year since a near-fatal gunshot wound left Shelby Nichols with the ability to read minds. In that time she’s faced one problem after another. She’s been shot at, framed for murder, and targeted by a serial killer, just to name a few. Now she’s trying to help her lawyer husband win a murder trial that will enable him to become a partner in his law firm. Sounds easy, right? But nothing ever goes as planned when it comes to Shelby Nichols.

When special agent, Blake Beauchaine, shows up to collect a debt from Shelby, things get even more complicated, and Shelby is soon on her way to Paris. A routine meeting with a rogue agent reveals a sinister plot, putting Shelby into the cross-hairs of a known terrorist. Even worse, she doesn’t speak French, so it seems her mind-reading abilities won’t help her this time.

Things go from bad to downright dangerous for Shelby, especially since her usual guardians, Uncle Joey, and his hit-man, Ramos, are back in the states. Lost and on her own in the streets of Paris, can Shelby escape the cold-blooded killer in time to stop his devious plans, or will this be the end of the line for Shelby Nichols?

Excerpt

The first day of spring arrived, filling me with an overwhelming sense of freedom. Even though the temperature wasn’t real warm, it meant that winter was officially over. Even better, a ride on the motorcycle behind Ramos was now a possibility.
I’d missed that and I’d missed him. He’d been gone for two weeks helping Uncle Joey take care of some out-of-town business. I wasn’t exactly sure what that entailed and... believe me, I didn’t want to know. Jackie, Uncle Joey’s secretary and wife, told me they were both due back in the next few days, and deep down where I didn’t want to admit it, I could hardly wait to see them again.
That probably made me a bad person, since I worked for Uncle Joey, and he was a mob-boss. Ramos was his hit-man and he’d saved my life a few times. I had to admit, it was a far cry from the first time I’d met Ramos almost a year ago, when he was thinking he might have to kill me for the big boss.
I’d had to tell Uncle Joey my secret that I could read minds to stop that from happening. Since then, my skills had come in handy for Uncle Joey, and gotten me into a lot of trouble. But he’d always been there to bail me out, both literally and figuratively.
So now I helped Uncle Joey, not because I was forced into it, but because I wanted to. That was just twisted on so many levels, and he wasn’t even my real uncle. But I couldn’t seem to stop, so I did my best to keep on the right side of things.
Ramos was another part of that story. He was one hot and swoon-worthy man any woman would fall for. I had to keep reminding myself that I was happily married every time I laid eyes on him. He was the quintessential bad boy and, like a decadent chocolate dessert with whipped cream and a cherry on top, something that I might want in the worst way, but would also be very bad for me.
If I wasn’t married with kids... well, who knew what could happen, but I loved my husband and children, and Ramos respected that. Even so, there were still times when my heart seemed to have a mind of its own around him, and I’d have to rein it in or lose control, which was not an option.
Only a handful of people knew I could read minds, and I liked it that way. I told everyone else I had premonitions, and that mostly worked. I also had my own consulting agency, which included helping the police along with my own clients. Because of that, I managed to get into even more trouble, and that wasn’t counting the mob-boss part.
Like now.
My husband, Chris, had asked for my help on a hard case. He was an associate partner in the prestigious law firm of Cohen, Larsen and Pratt. This case was the single most important event of Chris’ career, mostly because the partners were looking to replace the Cohen part of the firm, and changing it to Larsen, Pratt and... Nichols.
This was a huge deal, and I wondered if the fact that Chris handled all of Uncle Joey’s accounts had something to do with it. Probably, but I wasn’t touching that with a ten foot pole. This put a lot of pressure on me. Not as much as Chris, but still… I didn’t want to screw it up for him.
That brought me to my problem. I wasn’t sure I wanted to help Chris, mostly because he was defending a woman accused of killing her husband, and ten million dollars from the life insurance policy was in the balance. To complicate matters even more, the husband’s company was one of Chris’ biggest clients.
If they won, Chris’ firm would get a nice, fat share, and also keep the company as a client. But from everything he’d told me, she sounded guilty as sin. If I listened to her thoughts, I’d know for sure, and that would just ruin everything. It made me realize that sometimes my ‘gift’ wasn’t so great. Not when I had to use it to get someone off who actually deserved some jail time.
But... wasn’t that what I did for Uncle Joey? So how was this any worse?
In fact, I’d recently made a deal with a government agent to keep Uncle Joey out of prison. In exchange for my help on one of his cases, he’d agreed to make any charges against Uncle Joey disappear. When Uncle Joey found out what I’d done, he wasn’t too happy with me. Especially since he thought I’d told Blake Beauchaine I could read minds.
Once he knew I hadn’t, and Blake just wanted me for what he thought were my mad interrogation skills, he’d calmed down. Still, Uncle Joey told me he could have handled anything Blake might have thrown at him without my deal. To be honest, it kind of hurt my feelings. Then he made me promise to involve him if Blake ever came to collect.
So now on top of everything else, I had Blake’s phone call to look forward to, and Uncle Joey to involve after that. It was enough to give me an ulcer.
“Shelby? We’re ready for you,” Chris said, poking his head out of the conference room.

Her smiles brought my own to life. Her beautiful face was what made me get out of bed every morning. Looking into her eyes was my favorite part of the day.

She was in my every thought, in every passing second.

My lips craved her lips, and my hands yearned to touch her beautiful skin. My heart called out her name with every beat, and I only had eyes for her.

Her. My life, my soul, my personal Heaven-on-Earth.

She was everything I had ever wanted, but everything I could never have.

She was my flesh and blood.

She was my sister.

PROLOGUE:
Adrian
My heart started beating fast as I saw her coming down the stairs. Wearing her white, strapless sundress, with her hair down caressing her shoulders, she looked like an angel.
Her green eyes caught mine, and I saw the sadness filling them. She masked it right away, replacing it with a furious stare—trying to tell me that she was mad at me for what I did with her a while ago in her room.
Well, she could fool anyone else she wanted, but not me. She liked it, and I fucking knew it.
The hem of her short dress danced along her upper thighs as she took one hurried step after another. Ignoring her angry look, I licked my lips, knowing that it would make her look away because she wouldn’t want me to see the need in her eyes.
And that was exactly what she did. But she was helpless against the redness of the blush which covered her face and neck as she passed me.
“Daddy?” she began as she approached our father, who was sitting at the kitchen table, drinking his coffee while he read the newspaper.
“Hmm?” He looked up from the papers in his hand, facing her.
“I… Um, I want to talk with you about something,” she said, looking at the floor—her blush growing more intense.
“Sure. What is it?”
“I…Uh, I…” As Lily stood there, hesitant to say what she wanted to say, she looked at our mom, who was sitting at the table across from where Lily was standing. She even caught my eyes for a quick second, but then looked down right away.
“Do you want to go into my office, Lily?” he asked, placing the paper on the table.
“Uh, no… It’s fine. I just… Uh, well, I’m going to graduate soon, and … uh, there is that guy in my school—”
Fucking what?
“H—he asked me out more than one time and … uh, I want to say yes.”
“Lily, sweetheart, we’ve talked about this before, and you know the rule,” he said in his calm voice.
“But, Dad, I’m almost eighteen; I’m not a little girl anymore. I’m the only one my age who’s not allowed to date!”
“Lily, I—”
“Dave,” Mom interrupted, “I think Lily is mature enough to make good decisions.”
Fuck that, she doesn’t know shit.
“But, Beth, she’s not even eighteen yet.”
“Honey, it’s just a matter of a few months before she leaves for college. It’s better that she starts dating now and learns more about the kind of relationship she wants before she starts a new phase in her life. Don’t you think?”
My blood started to boil in my veins. My own mother was convincing my dad with logic. Now he was actually thinking about it. I didn’t want him to fucking think about it; I want him to say a clear no.
“Sweetheart, I don’t think it’s—”
“Please, Dad. Even Adrian is allowed to date, and we’re the same age. It’s not fair,” She pointed in my direction without looking.
“I’m older!” I called out, correcting her.
“By ten minutes, asshole!” she yelled back at me.
“Language, Lillian,” Mom warned.
“Sorry.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing! They were actually considering this bullshit? I had to set my glass of orange juice down on the table so I didn’t end up throwing it at one of them.
“The only reason I don’t want you to date is that you’re so innocent, and I don’t want someone to break your heart, sweetie.”
Or break your fucking hymen.
“I’m old enough to know how to choose, and I’m mature enough to face the responsibilities of my choices, Dad.”
My Dad let out a long sigh, and then I saw the hint of a smile forming on his lips.
No! No! No! No fucking way. Come on!
“Okay.”
“So… That’s a yes?”
“Yes, Lily, you can say yes.” He smiled.
Fuck! A million fucking fucks!
“Thanks, Dad. You’re awesome.” She bent down and placed a kiss on his cheek.
“You’re welcome, sweetie. “
She did the same with Mom. “Thanks, Mom.”
She walked over and stood right in front of me. She was so close I could smell her soft peach shampoo as she leaned in a little bit, picking my glass up off the small table.
“I’ll take that if you don’t want it,” she smiled softly, not waiting for me to reply as she took a sip without taking her eyes off of mine. I’m sure that the green in them was replaced with the darkness of my anger.
I only snarled at her.
She leaned forward again, her lips just an inch away from my face. She was so close I could feel her warm breath on my cheek. It took everything in me not to moan.
“I win, Dear Brother, “she whispered and then touched her soft lips to my cheek.
Fuck!
She thought she was going to date now that she had permission?
She thought that she’d go out with a guy and kiss and hug and fuck?
She thought I’d ever allow anyone to touch what was mine?
No fucking way in hell!
When she was about to back off after kissing me, I gripped her forearm and whispered back. “Over my dead body, little sister.

Featured Excerpts

Forbidden by Sierra Rose Excerpt.
“I can’t stop thinking about her,” I said.
“She’s off limits. You know that. Her old man will shoot you dead. So stay the fuck away from that broad!”
“But I love a challenge…The more I can’t have her, the more I want her.”
“C’mon, man. She’s forbidden fruit.”
“I want to snatch that fruit off that tree…and just take one taste.”
“Look what happened to Eve,” he said. “Except she’ll make out better than you will. Because you’ll be dead when her dad catches you sniffing around his precious princess. You can’t pursue a doomed romance.”
“Is there such a thing as forbidden soul mates?”
“That girl will rip your soul in half.”
I laughed.
He sipped his beer. “There’s never a dull moment with Selene.”
“No, there’s not.”
“But seriously? Is she worth dying for? You need to ask yourself that question.”
“I’ve asked myself that question a million times. And it’s why I stay away.”
“Then keep doing what you’re doing. Because it’s good for your health. And why do you want to get involved with a crazy girl, anyway? She pushes the limits and constantly rides the edge.”
“And she does it fearlessly. That’s what I love about her. She’s not like any other girl I’ve ever met. She’s got spunk. She’s smart, spontaneous, a thrill-seeker, a risk-taker, and she loads of fun. Did I mention the fact she drives me absolutely insane? And her smile… There is nothing sexier to me than a woman’s smile.”
“I think it’s the thrill of the hunt. Men are aggressive by nature, and once we devour our prey, we’re off on the next hunt.”
“It’s more than that. She challenges me…inspires me like no other girl.”
“She’s toxic,” he said.
“Try….intoxicating.”
He threw his arms up in the air. “Okay, I give up. I think you’ve lost your mind because all you think of is the crazy sex you’ll get.”
“Crazy in the best way possible. But she’s not a whore. Crazy, yes. Loose? No. She doesn’t sleep around. She’s just wild and carefree.”
He nodded. “Selene’s like a wild horse that can’t be broken.”
“I’ll break her. You can count on that.”
“You tame her? Good luck. Besides, the wild ones are rarely relationship material anyway.”
“Who says I’m looking for a relationship?”
~~~
Lexy Timms Billionaire Biker
Tall, lean and curved in all the right places. Her breasts were on full display in a crisp red top that contrasted perfectly with her wide-legged white slacks. Her blondish-brown hair had been twisted into a perfect fishtail braid and the expensive, oversized sunglasses on her face hid her eyes but not her straight nose or full, lush mouth.
She was definitely in the wrong place. Morgan had seen her type before, curious rich girls from the other side of town slumming it up in the biker bar, grabbing their chests in excitement as they eagerly stepped in the door, blinking from the strong sunlight outside.
None of them ever dared to cross that threshold during the night hours, they came in the day—usually with one or two of their friends, all of them giggling madly at their own daring. Morgan tossed back a shot and watched her. He wasn’t the only one. Heads turned all over the place.
During the day the crowd was not so much biker as it was folks who just liked to ride. There was a definitive difference. Most of the people seated at the tables or who bellied up to the bar didn’t wear a patch, and if they did, those colors belonged to small obscure clubs, little vanity clubs made up of rich guys who wanted to be bikers on the weekends, and hedge managers during the week. The woman strolling across the floor fit in with them, for all he knew she was there to meet one of them.
Her perfume hit his nose. It was spicy and rich, and her ass was on full display as she leaned across the bar, causing those pants to pull taut across the pert slopes of her bottom. His eyes went right to those firm, uplifted cheeks.
Her voice, a sweet and slightly husky thing, filtered through the air as she said, “I’d like Maker’s Mark and a twist of lemon. Just a twist, not a huge wedge please.”
Jack, the burly bartender, gave her a filthy look and stalked off. Her red-hued nails tapped the bar. Morgan shook his head and took another sip of his drink. He had more important things to think about than this woman, but he couldn’t seem to get his mind off her, or his eyes either.
“He’s probably going to give me the whole damn lemon.”
There was amusement in her voice. Her fingers lay on the bar and he stared down at them before saying, “You’ll be lucky if he only gives you one.”
“Damn! Hoisted by my own petard. Or pickiness. Whichever suits the current situation.”
He chuckled, surprised by her wit. She whipped the glasses off to reveal a set of baby-blue eyes surrounded by a thick fringe of black lashes. He looked away. He had to keep his mind focused. Dealing with Craig was always tricky, dealing with Craig when he’d pulled some dumb-fuck move that could get the whole club in trouble was worse. The last thing he needed was to be distracted.
But what a freakin’ beautiful disaster of a distraction.
Jack came back and plunked a heavy tumbler filled with two fingers of whiskey onto the counter. He held the lemon half up in the air and gave it a hard twist. Morgan winced as a long squirt of lemon juice filled the glass, causing the lovely amber whiskey to turn cloudy.
Jack said, “With a twist, just like you ordered.”
Her hand shot out. She picked up the glass and turned it up, drinking down the vile-looking concoction. She set the glass down and gave Jack a creamy smile. “Perfect. Thanks. How much?”
She had guts. Morgan admired that and he saw the unwilling grin tugging at Jack’s lips. Morgan leaned in. “I got it.”
Jack nodded and walked away.
Her head turned. “Thanks but that’s not necessary.”
A closer look revealed her youth. Early twenties. Morgan grinned and shook his head. “I can’t believe you drank that.”
Her smile widened, revealing square white teeth. “I won’t believe it either later, I’m sure.”
He laughed, he couldn’t help it. He also couldn’t help asking, “No offense but what brought you in here, to the Orphan Pint bar?”
She sighed. “I’m escaping my boss.”
“I see.”
She checked her watch and rolled her eyes. “I should probably get back.”
“Or quit your job.”
“Wouldn’t that be nice? Just chuck it all and walk away.”
“It is.” His eyes met hers. “What do you do, if you don’t mind me asking?”
Her teeth went to her bottom lip. “I’m an assistant.”
“Like a personal assistant?”
“Yes.” She thought for a moment and added, “For the Wilkes family.”
Just Love Me – By C.C. Cartwright
Justin POV.
I’m enjoying a day at the beach and my sister Kylie shows up with her little posse of girlfriends. None of them are much to look at, except for one, and she looks vaguely familiar.
I admire her from a distance for a good part of the day. As I play volleyball with my buddies, she comes and watches. Of course I put on a show for her. You see, I’m Gods gift to women. I have a hard, lean body, which I work hard at maintaining, and the chicks dig it. I see Kylie’s sexy friend looking in my direction.
We take a break and decide to go and cool off in the waves. While my buddies and I are body surfing, I see Kylie’s enticing friend standing at the water’s edge in her teeny weeny bikini. I decide to venture onto shore and approach her as I walk out of the water.
“Hi Justin, don’t you remember me?” I hear a very feminine voice greet me as I walk up to her.
“Wait a minute, is that you, Sloane?” I finally realize who she is.
“Yes, don’t you recognize me?” She shoves me teasingly with her soft hands, making the skin on my wet chest sizzle.
“You’ve grown up,” I say, making no bones about eyeing her from head to toe and she actually blushes.
“So I’ve been told,” she says.
“How long has it been since I’ve laid eyes on you?” I eye her again.
“Too long,” she says in her seductive voice.
“What are you up to now?”
“I’m in my last year at Pepperdine,” she replies. So she is still local for me and my ears perk up, as well as other parts of my body.
“How about you?”
“I live and work in LA now,” I reply.
“Oh, that’s right, Kylie told me.”
The amount of sex appeal she packs in that petite frame of hers would have a guy hard in seconds. I’m already dying to get in between those long, sexy legs of hers. I can tell she knows it by the way she moves and tilts her head and pierces me with those sultry, exotic eyes of hers. The way her lips move leave me fantasizing about having them wrapped around me.
Her voice is the perfect combination of deep and throaty, yet it has a flirtatious lilt to it. Seriously, she could bottle it and sell it like an expensive perfume.
From eyeing her in her tiny bikini, which leaves little to the imagination, I peg her measurements to be 34-24-34 of pure perfection. She’s probably a C cup, a large handful, which looks even larger on her svelte body. She catches me eyeing her like a dog does with a bone. Yes, I want to consume her. But I have to approach this one just right. She definitely gets her share of attention and can pick and choose who she lets into her bed, would be my guess.
Judging by the way she sways those curvaceous hips of hers, she ain’t a virgin. She has probably heard every line that a guy on the make can throw her way. I need to think of my approach, although I have never had a problem getting what I want from the female persuasion. Girls flock to me and my rock hard body that I keep up by hitting the gym several times a week.
On top of her enticing physical attributes, she is articulate and smart. I find this to add to her appeal, not take away from it. I’m not like most guys, I need a girl who is smart and will challenge me to hold my interest. She tells me she’s still in school, studying business law at Pepperdine.
I myself just graduated. Set myself in a cool bachelor pad overlooking the city in one of those high-rise condos in Downtown LA. I just started working at Goldman Sachs as an up-and-coming Investment Banker.
As our beach party winds down, I manage to score Sloane’s number and a date with her for next Saturday night. I'll be counting the days until I can get my hands on that sinful body of hers.
EXCERPT:
Although it feels like time has completely stopped it most definitely has not. I am completely oblivious to how long Ethan and I have been standing outside my hotel room when we are startled apart by the sound of a very pissed off, deep, familiar voice.
“What the fuck is going on, Lexi?” Devin’s heated voice booms through the open hallway making me cringe and my body turn to stone at the sound. I’m still partially wrapped up in Ethan’s arms but when I finally detangle myself completely out of his hold, I step to the side of him so I can see Devin. I get a pretty good view of him too since he’s standing only a few feet behind Ethan with hate evident in his normally kind eyes. I know shock is all over my face as I stare at Devin as if he’s just a figment of my imagination. Ethan hasn’t moved a muscle. His back is to his enemy yet he chooses to stay facing me. It takes another few seconds before I finally take notice to what Devin is wearing. He has on running shorts and running shoes. His body is glistening with sweat and his face is red as if he was actually outside running in the Miami heat.
What the hell? My emotions are all over the place. Confused, scared, hurt, happy. I swear on my parent’s urns that Devin was just in bed with the twins. How is he standing here like he was actually out for a run and why can’t I find my damned voice to ask that very question? Suddenly I hear the twins’ door to their room open. I turn my attention behind me just as a random guy, who looks like he could be Devin’s fraternal twin brother or doppelganger, exits the twins’ room. My mind automatically fishes for the memory of my conversation with Jesse. Once I replay what he had said privately plus all of the banter with his buddies, I can see how a drunken person could mistake Mr. Random for Devin. The twins’ guest is wearing gray boardshorts and flips flops and steps out carrying his black T-shirt in his hand. He stops when he sees the three of us standing here. I’m sure we’re quite the sight to see. Me, with red watery eyes and airplane stale clothes, Ethan who has not moved but his irritation is quite evident, and Devin who looks as if he is ready to kill Ethan. The stranger who appears to be very much hung over but oozes sexual satisfaction gives us a half smile, says “Hey” to Devin, and inches past the soon-to-be war zone towards the elevator. It’s usually females you see doing the walk of shame but this morning it’s this wonderful guy, this wonderful guy who isn’t Devin. Shit. Devin.
“Answer me, Alexa.” Devin’s voice is seething and it makes me snap my head back around to face him. I glance briefly at Ethan and I see his eyes are screwed shut, jaw tense, the vein in his neck is pulsing, and his fists are clenched at his sides. Well shit. I can’t explain this because I don’t fully understand it all myself. I look back to Devin who is staring at me with so much anger and hurt that it takes my breath away.
Devin takes two steps closer and Ethan’s eyes snap open. Before either one can do anything I step between both of them. I’ve been in this position once before and just like the last time I have no idea what I could or would do if these two decided to throw down. I take another step towards Devin. He just stares down at me waiting for his answer.
My voice is quiet when I finally speak to him. “Devin, I can explain part of this but I can’t explain Ethan being here because I don’t have that answer-yet.”
“Do you think I’m fucking stupid, Lexi?” There is so much pain evident in his voice that my tears start to spill again.
“No, Devin. I don’t think you’re stupid. Can we please go into our room and talk privately?” I know I sound pathetic but that’s probably because I am. I just want to be alone with Devin and figure out this craziness.
Just when I think Devin is going to concede and go into our room with me I feel one of Ethan’s hands settle on my hip and that one tiny gesture sends Devin flying over the proverbial edge. Everything happens so fast that all I feel is my body being shoved out of the way like I’m a ragdoll. I trip over my bags and my head slams against a solid surface and everything goes black.
(Elementals #1)
Published by: Dreamscape Publishing
Publication date: January 26th 2016
Genres: Urban Fantasy, Young Adult
Filled with magic, thrilling adventure, and sweet romance, Elementals is the first in a new series that fans of Percy Jackson and The Secret Circle will love!
When Nicole Cassidy moves from sunny Georgia to gloomy New England, the last thing she expects is to learn that her homeroom is a cover for a secret coven of witches. Even more surprisingly … she’s apparently a witch herself. Despite doubts about her newfound abilities, Nicole is welcomed into this ancient circle of witches and is bedazzled by their powers–and, to her dismay, by Blake–the school’s notorious bad-boy.
Girls who get close to Blake wind up hurt. His girlfriend Danielle will do anything to keep them away, even if she must resort to using dark magic. But the chemistry between Blake and Nicole is undeniable, and despite wanting to protect Nicole from Danielle’s wrath, he finds it impossible to keep his distance.
When the Olympian Comet shoots through the sky for the first time in three thousand years, Nicole, Blake, Danielle, and two others in their homeroom are gifted with mysterious powers. But the comet has another effect–it opens the portal to the prison world that has contained the Titans for centuries. After an ancient monster escapes and attacks Nicole and Blake, it’s up to them and the others to follow the clues from a cryptic prophecy so that they can save their town … and possibly the world.
EXCERPT
Everyone stared at me, and I looked to the front of the room, where a tall, lanky man in a tweed suit stood next to a blackboard covered with the morning announcements. His gray hair shined under the light, and his wrinkled skin and warm smile reminded me more of a grandfather than a teacher.
He cleared his throat and rolled a piece of chalk in his palm. “You must be Nicole Cassidy,” he said.
“Yeah.” I nodded and looked around at the other students. There were about thirty of them, and there seemed to be an invisible line going down the middle of the room, dividing them in half. The students near the door wore jeans and sweatshirts, but the ones closer to the wall looked like they were dressed for a fashion show instead of school.
“It’s nice to meet you Nicole.” The teacher sounded sincere, like he was meeting a new friend instead of a student. “Welcome to our homeroom. I’m Mr. Faulkner, but please call me Darius.” He turned to the chalkboard, lifted his hand, and waved it from one side to the other. “You probably weren’t expecting everything to look so normal, but we have to be careful. As I’m sure you know, we can’t risk letting anyone else know what goes on in here.”
Then the board shimmered—like sunlight glimmering off the ocean—and the morning announcements changed into different letters right in front of my eyes.
