EXCERPT FROM LION EYES BY JENNIFER ASHLEY

Seamus positioned the mirror on Nadine’s dresser so that he could see out the window without any of the Shifters below being able to see him. He counted four in front of the house. Probably the same number were in back, with more out of sight on the perimeter. That’s how he would have positioned his trackers.
Seamus knew who the leader was, the one who stepped forward, his hands raised in a placating gesture. Not surrender—this Shifter didn’t know the meaning of the word.
“I know you have a Shifter in there,” the man said, his rumbling voice carrying. The hint of Irish accent was clear. “Send him out, and we go home. We have no wish to harm you.”
Seamus had never met Dylan Morrissey, but he knew a lot about him. All Shifters did. The man used to be leader of the Austin Shiftertown. When his son took over, Dylan became more of an overseer, roaming the Shifter territories in South Texas, making sure all Shifters kept in line. Rogue and feral Shifters were to be rounded up, brought in, Collared, and processed. Dylan and his trackers did a lot of that.
Dylan had been instrumental in shutting down the bunker that had housed Kendrick and his Shifters. He’d destroyed it and left Kendrick’s Shifters in the wind. Dark anger spiraled inside him.
“You’re still on my property,” Nadine shouted down. “Now get the hell off it. Want me to have you rounded up and caged?”
Dylan didn’t move. He was flanked by a man with a sword—a Guardian. Probably his son, Sean Morrissey, the Guardian of the Austin Shiftertown.
The very large Shifter standing behind the two of them had to be a bear. Only bears had that much bulk. The fourth was tall and hard, with tattoos all over him, his head shaved.
Trackers, Seamus surmised, and tough ones. The bear would be stronger than all of them put together but not as fast. The Morrisseys were lions, like Seamus—he’d be more or less evenly matched against each of them individually, though Dylan had a rep of never being beaten.
Seamus wasn’t sure about the tatt guy. Feline by the look of him, but Seamus couldn’t tell what kind of cat he was. If something like cheetah, then the guy could outrun Seamus but probably not outfight him. The guy looked like he could hold his own, however. He radiated self-assurance.
A fifth Shifter walked around the house to join them. He was big like the bear, but with close-cut black hair, tatts, and an attitude that could only be Lupine.
Dylan tried again. “I know you have a Shifter in there. We can scent him. Send him out, and we’ll be gone.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Nadine said. “You get off my property, then we’ll talk.”
Dylan made a minute signal to the trackers. Nadine and Bree wouldn’t catch it, but Seamus recognized the body language. It was, Find a way in and take him.
Seamus turned from the mirror, though he remained out of sight of the windows. “I’ll go down,” he said quietly to Nadine and Bree. “I don’t want them to hurt you.” Not that he planned to submit without a fight. He’d go, but they’d have to catch him.
Seamus suited action to word, without waiting for response, heading for the stairs.
A soft body brushed by, and then Bree was in front of him, blocking his way. “Like hell you’re giving yourself up.” Bree scowled, blue eyes glittering with anger. “They might be Shifters, but they don’t look like they want to hand you a beer and welcome you with open arms.”
Seamus put his hand on her shoulder. Damn, damn, damn. He shouldn’t have done that—one touch, and he didn’t want to let go. He wanted to stay here, sink into Bree’s softness, let her make his troubles melt away. Or at least give him the illusion that his troubles no longer existed. Let him float in pure bliss.
But if he didn’t leave, Bree might be hurt, and so could others who depended on him. He didn’t know what the Shifters outside would do to Bree and Nadine if they came storming in to grab Seamus. While Shifters were usually careful with humans, they did so mostly to avoid drawing the attention of the human police and Shifter Bureau. They weren’t necessarily kind.
“I didn’t say I’d give up,” Seamus told Bree, reluctantly lifting his hand away. “I’ll distract them and run. Draw them away from you.”
At the window, Nadine said, “Oh, I’ll give them a distraction.”
Not a bad idea. “Wait until I’m ready,” Seamus said. “I’ll signal, you do your thing, and I’ll go.”
He pushed around Bree and went down the stairs but heard her coming behind him.
“Seamus.” Bree grabbed the tail of his shirt. Seamus turned back, caught more by her presence than her hold. “You can’t.”
“I can,” Seamus said. “I’m fast. I’ll be gone before they realize.”
“That’s not what I meant. What will they do to you if they catch you?”
“They’re from the Austin Shiftertown,” Seamus said—no reason for her not to know. “They want to put a Collar on me and sequester me. They’ve been chasing me ... us ... for about a month now.”
Bree tightened her hand on the T-shirt’s hem. “Where will you go?”
“Somewhere not here,” Seamus said. “Understand? They’ll chase me away from you. It’s what I do. You and your mother don’t need a bunch of pain in the ass Shifters giving you grief.”
Bree’s blue eyes took on a bleak look. Without the makeup, waking up from sleep, Seamus saw that she was a little older than he’d first thought—not that he was an expert on human ages. She was old enough to have a mate and cub of her own, old enough to have had life kick at her.
Bree took a step closer to him. “What I mean is, will I ever see you again?”
Seamus studied her for a few beats. In that moment, his body, which had been cooperative up until now, became a massive knot of pain.
He’d been calmer since he’d been in this house, giving him a crumb of hope that he’d conquered the wildness bubbling inside him. He realized as Bree’s body brushed his, that he’d conquered it because of her. As soon as he’d found her, her nearness, her touch had started to quiet him down.
If he left her, would the pain, the confusion, come rushing back?
But if Seamus stayed, he’d leave Bree open to danger. No matter what, Seamus had to go.
Seamus peeled Bree’s hold from his shirt, wrapped his arm around her, and dragged her close. Warmth of woman came to him as Bree’s body curved against his, the thin shirt letting him feel her limbs, her full breasts, the supple bend of her spine.
Seamus leaned down and kissed her mouth, a full kiss, not preparing her, not going slowly. He needed to kiss her right now, might never have another chance.
Bree curled her fists on his shoulders but didn’t push away. She opened her lips to him, accepting. Her tongue moved against his, she tasting him, pushing herself up into him.
Seamus deepened the kiss, taking what he could. Bree tasted of spice and the night, heat and everything that was good. He tasted her deep sorrow as well, a sadness she couldn’t shake, and her need. Bree had so much need. She was hungry, this woman, and no one had filled that craving within her.
Pain snatched at him and wouldn’t relent. Seamus could take her with him, keep her next to him, whatever happened. Bound as one, mates.
He tightened his embrace, kissing her harder. Bree answered with as bold a kiss. She needed him, and he her. Primal, basic need.
Bree wrapped her arms around his neck, her unfettered breasts scooping against him. Bree’s back was a pliant line, drawing his hands along it to her buttocks. Soft flesh met his touch, their position rubbing her abdomen right over his cock.
If five and more Shifters hadn’t been ready to charge the house and break down the door, Seamus would have lowered Bree to the stairs and relieved his frenzy then and there. Swift thrusts while she clung to him, the sounds Bree made in her throat escalating to full cries as they reached the breaking point together.
For now, Seamus could only touch her, kiss her, drink in her warmth against the coldness that was to come.
“Any time you’re ready, Seamus.”
Nadine’s quiet voice came from above. Bree abruptly broke the kiss, her eyes wide, face flushed, her breathing rapid.
Nadine peered over the banisters at them, the shotgun held carefully so the barrel pointed upward.
Seamus turned his back and walked away, moving on down the stairs. If he stayed, if he looked at Bree one second longer, he’d never go, and he knew it.

“Miss Richardson, we meet again.”

She jumped, turning upon immediately recognising the voice.

“Do my eyes deceive me? Can it possibly be that these books hold more interest for you than some of the eligible bachelors I see before me?”

Taking quite an offence at Frank’s assumption, she snapped, “I’m not looking for an eligible bachelor, thank you, I’m fine as I am.”

Her eyes widened and she paused. How handsome Frank looked, taking a glance over her shoulder. His prominent good looks outweighed those of any other man in the room as he stood upright and proud in his black suit, a crisp white cotton shirt complementing his colouring.

“Are you quite well?” he enquired. As he spoke, her beauty was reflected in his eyes.

“If you’re referring to my memory, I could ask you the same question, couldn’t I?”

He laughed, perhaps out of politeness, but it was obvious from his expression that he hadn’t the faintest idea what she meant. Introductions and formalities over, the door to the dining room opened. Heather felt uneasy as she noticed the butler, Mr Clements, standing in the doorway, seeing the guests to their seats. Chatting between one another, they located their place names along the highly polished rectangular table, and sat down. Heather, being an unexpected diner, found herself at the opposite end to Lady Haunchwood, who sat at the head of the table. Lost in a sea of strangers, Heather’s mood lifted when Florence sat to her right, in deep conversation with a gentleman of a similar age to her. Mr Boswel sat to her left, next to a very attractive lady, her raven-black hair in much the same style as her own, though it was decorated with a beaded pearl headband. Her pale skin was absolutely flawless, and she had deep blue eyes that seemed to draw Mr Boswel in as she spoke. Heather managed a sideways glance at her place name – Miss Thornber. Mr Boswell never looked Heather’s way, not once, and she felt quite resentful towards this beautiful lady for the apparent hold she had over him as she flirted openly.

Their connection seemed to be much to the approval of Lady Haunchwood, however. Funny that, Heather thought. She must have connections, or be of so-called good breeding, perfect marrying material. But why could she feel that sinking feeling in her stomach, and why was she so bothered? Wasn’t this what she wanted?

Excerpt

The real reason why I was so reluctant to tell him what happened to me was that I was ashamed. I was so ashamed of what I did. There wasn’t a moment of a day when I wasn’t filled with shame and regret. I beat myself up constantly, and I knew, I just knew, that this man would judge me. He would think that I was a horrible person.
And he would be absolutely right.
He was still looking at me, with those beautiful blue eyes. I was getting goose pimples on my flesh, and my brain wouldn’t turn off. I was still mentally undressing him, and I could tell that his body was as sexy as the rest of him. He was dressed in a dress shirt, but I could see the outline of his pecs, abs and arms through the fabric.
And his scent was intoxicating. It was soap and cologne and pure, pure man.
He licked his lips, and I had to admit that I wanted them to be on me. On my body. All over my body. And, especially, on my lips. I just knew that he was an amazing kisser and I also knew that he would know just how to make me come.
Why was I thinking this? After all, this was the man who virtually kidnapped me. Granted, he was a perfect gentleman, so far, and he was going out of his way to make sure I got home okay. But, nonetheless, he was responsible for my being across town, away from my safety zone.
He looked disappointed that I wasn’t going to tell him what had happened to me. But then he, quietly, let me know that he already knew.
“CJ,” he said. “I wanted you to tell me what caused you to seclude yourself, but I already know.”
Of course he knew. He was a reasonably intelligent guy, and I was sure that he read the newspaper and listened to the news. If he did, then he knew what had happened to me.
Everybody did.
“Well, then,” I began. “Now that you know what kind of a person I am, I’m quite sure that this will be the last I’ll be seeing of you. And you really should have said something earlier to let me know that you already knew what kind of a tragedy I’ve experienced.”
His eyes were now looking sympathetic. “I certainly hope that this is not the last time I see you.” His face was so close to mine, I thought, for just a moment, he was going to kiss me. I closed my eyes, and bit my bottom lip.
“Perhaps you hope to see me again, but I really don’t think that you’re going to. But I thank you for at least not recoiling in horror in being around the likes of me.”
He took a deep breath. “CJ,” he said. “What happened to you wasn’t your fault. I hope that you believe that. And your panic disorder can be overcome. I know that from personal experience.”
I looked down at my hands. “Thanks for your words, but they’re not doing any good. And you can’t just tell me to stop blaming myself and hope that your words will get through to me.”
It was then that I looked out the window and saw that my apartment building was looming right in front of me. “Thanks,” I said, “for getting me home.”
“I’m going to walk you into your apartment.”
“No,” I said. “I’ve got this.” I really didn’t, and, to be honest, the sedative was causing my legs to feel weak.
At least, I told myself it was the sedative. In reality, I knew that this man was responsible for my sudden feeling of weakness. My body was feeling weak, and my spirit was certainly feeling weak. I felt like unbuttoning his shirt with my teeth.
I got out of the limo, and my legs gave way.
Then, to my sheer embarrassment, Asher was right beside me, and he scooped me up in his strong arms. In spite of myself, I wrapped my arms around his neck, and put my head on his beating chest. “Fair warning,” I said. “I live on the fourth floor. And there’s no elevator.”
“I got this,” he said in a low voice.
And he did. He walked up all four flights of stairs without ever breaking a sweat.
We got to my apartment, and I turned to him, and held out my hand. “Thank you, Asher,” I said.
He bowed his head and smiled. “I’ll be seeing you.”
And, in spite of myself, I really wished that he was right about that.

AUTHOR BIO:

Annie Jocoby is the author of 8 contemporary romance novels and 3 New Adult contemporary romance novels. Her motivation to begin writing these novels is that she was interested in writing about rich men who actually love and respect their women. Her heroes are alpha and damaged, yet also genuinely good guys.

Ryan, Nick, Luke and Asher are all complicated characters who have experienced plenty of darkness, yet always seek the light. They would all go to the ends of the earth to protect the women they love. And they’re all sexy, enigmatic, magnetic and great in bed.

All of Annie’s books have things in common: they all combine a touch of mystery and intrigue with drama, love, and lots of hot sex. Some of the books have action and even some criminal elements in them. Her current book, in fact, is her first book that would be classified as straight romantic suspense, although it also combines definite elements of the thriller genre! If you’re in the market for a book that is fast-paced, where the heroes are beautiful and wealthy, and the heroines are strong, vulnerable and flawed, then try these books out!

Excerpt

We walk barefoot on the soft sand side by side, holding our shoes in our hands. The beach is deserted. Two old pedal boats sit forgotten by the edge of the water. My skin shudders and I get goose bumps as Tomas’s arm brushes against mine in the warm, calm night.
“It’s perfect here,” I say, when he comes to a halt to stare at the dark sea.
He has brought a bottle of red wine which we have decided not to open until after the swim.
Tomas quickly takes off his shirt, taking my breath away. He’s a shining excellence under the pale starlight. He’s a hypnotic specimen of muscle, smooth skin and radiant confidence. I doubt there’s been a single moment in his adult life he didn’t know he was destined to make women lose their minds.
“Well?” he says, a slight impatience on his gorgeous face.
I shake my head before I remove my blouse pulling it over my head. I’m in my bikini now and although he’s seen me in it plenty of times in the sunlight, I blush a little now in the starlight.
I step in the water cautiously, checking the temperature. It’s not too cold but it’s not warm either. It will take a while to get used to the temperature.
Or it would have if Tomas didn’t decide to lift me up and throw me several feet forward and under the water.
“What the hell?” I say, rising onto my feet. Only my head is above water.
“You should embrace the unexpected,” he says.
“And you should not expect so much,” I say.
“That’s the problem, Taylor,” he says, wrapping his strong arms around my waistline. “You’ll never be ready to walk straight into the deep.”
My heart stops as he leans in for a kiss. He’s actually kissing me and I didn’t have to initiate it. It’s all him.
His powerful chest rises and falls rhythmically against my body as his tongue explores my mouth hungrily. His right hand moves to the back of my head, pulling my wet hair in a tight grip.
I wrap my arms around his neck, lifting one leg to force his hips closer to mine. The world vanishes in the darkness and the salty fullness of his lips. I want nothing more than to taste him.
He untangles his lips from mine, gently tracing my face with his fingertips. “Are you sure you want this?” he says, breathing unevenly.
It takes me a second to make up my mind. “I do,” I say. “I want this.”
“I’m not so sure.”
“Why?”
“Because you deserve better.”
“It’s not a freaking marriage proposal,” I say, growing more and more eager for his touch. “I understand that. And you’re better than you think.”

Excerpt

Since the light was beginning to lower, they set up camp, only a dozen leagues from the green riverbanks of Rhyman. Jak and Geffn lay on either side of Ra, a peculiar triad of necessity, and Geffn, fatigued, was asleep almost instantly.

Ra curled away from him toward Jak beneath her blanket, eyes seeming to glint like a cat’s, though nothing else was visible in the darkness. “We haven’t really had a moment alone since…” The soft murmur trailed off. Jak knew precisely what moment Ra meant. Before they’d left Rhyman; before Ra had disappeared in the night to rescue little Pearl—a Meerchild bred in captivity and kept in a cage by the prelate of In’La; before Ra had set fire to the temple there, and the prelate with it, Jak had thrown caution to the wind and climbed into bed with a goddess. The commitment to celibacy Jak had tried to maintain since before Ra’s arrival in Haethfalt had been tossed aside like a cheap shirt.

After returning to Rhyman with Pearl, Ra had made no further overtures toward Jak, and Jak hadn’t presumed to make any toward Ra.

“It’s all right. We don’t need to—” The weak protest died on Jak’s lips as Ra’s descended on them. Her kisses had a tendency to take one’s breath away, as if she gathered it all into herself, holding it, holding time, before giving it back.

When she finally let them both breathe, Ra slid beneath the blanket and rested her head on Jak’s breast. “I could deepen Geffn’s sleep.”

Jak considered it for a rash moment before squelching the thought. “No. That wouldn’t be fair to him.” That was an understatement. Screwing one’s new lover while asleep next to the jilted lover whose heart one had recently broken would be in bad form, to say the least. And it would add more to that invisible price Ra must be paying if she were to expend magical energy when she had so little physical energy to spare. “We’ll have time enough when we get home.”

“Home.” Ra snuggled closer. “That sounds very nice. I’ve never had a home before. Just a temple.” She said the word as if it meant “jail”. While she spoke, however, her hand moved down Jak’s arm with feathery strokes, dipped over Jak’s hip and across Jak’s belly, and played at the loose drawstring waistband, fingers just inside it.

Jak placed a hand over Ra’s, meaning to stop her, but Ra entwined their fingers and slid them lower. As if it were an act of self-pleasuring, Ra used Jak’s fingers to delve deeper and press against the supple flesh, tentative, leisurely motions encouraging Jak to show her how to proceed.

“When we return to Mound RemPetaJakGeffnMelKeirenRa—” She murmured the absurdly long name of their Haethfalt household as if they were only having a quiet conversation—“I’d like to make a quilt by hand.” She drew Jak’s fingers in a complex pattern, up and down, over and across, doubling back in infinity symbols that ended in sharp, insistent points, like the edges of rings bisecting each other. “Do you like this pattern?”

Jak shivered and breathed ascent as Ra pressed Jak’s fingers into the center point of the bisection. Her motions became smaller, tighter and more definitive.

“Some little rosettes where the squares join,” Ra whispered. “One. Two. Three. Four…” She demonstrated. “With a diamond in the center. Right…there.”

Jak had to grab the blanket and bite down on it to keep the sweet little crooning howl Ra had inspired from escaping audibly.

“And another, there.”

Jak struggled not to thrash, rationing sharp rhythmic breaths into the fabric of the blanket.

“And there.”

Oh gods.

“And then just there.”

In the grip of a wave of pleasure so intense it was almost unbearable, Jak clutched Ra’s hand so she could no longer effect her blissful torment, the other hand digging into the bedroll as pantomimed moans were buried in the crook of an elbow.

“Perhaps in peacock blue with threads of gold,” Ra continued as if she hadn’t just destroyed Jak utterly, her other hand casually stroking once more up Jak’s arm. “The colors of Ludtaht Ra. Though it may be time for new colors. I’ve always liked indigo.” She nestled against the hollow of Jak’s neck, putting a little kiss there before relaxing with a sigh to match Jak’s heaving breath. “Does that work for you?”

It took a moment to remember how to swallow and speak. “Work for me?” Jak let out a nervous, whispered laugh. “Just about killed me. I’m crazy about it.”

Hunter of Her Heart

The bike pulled up alongside her, its rider dragging one boot along the pavement.
“Hey, baby.”
“Don’t hey baby me, you son of a bitch.”
“I take it you’re mad."
Candi glared at the sidewalk ahead, refusing to look over. “Why would you think that?”
“Because you only call me names when we’re fighting or having sex. And we’re not having sex.”
“Go to hell, Zane.”
“Hey!” He pulled the bike up to the curb and cut the engine. She walked faster, her purse slapping her butt as she went.
“Hey!”
Trotting up behind her, he grabbed her arm.
“Let me go.”
She might as well have been talking to a brick wall. Communication with Zane wasn’t easy when there was something he was set on. And right now he was set on her.
That was usually enough to make her want to step out of her panties and right into his bed. But not tonight. Tonight she
was ticked, wanting to level him with one well-placed punch.
“Not until you talk to me,” he said evenly. He’d brought her to a standstill on the sidewalk, but she still wouldn’t look at him. He smelled fantastic, but she wasn’t going to let that sway her either.
Putting two fingers on her chin, he tried to move her head, but she wasn’t having it. What she really wanted to do was kick him square in the balls.
“You think you can just turn on that charm whenever you want, and it’ll get you off the hook? Is that what you think?”
His fingers trailed lightly down her throat in response. She trembled, unable to help it.
“I’m sorry.”
“Save it,” she said, batting his hand away. Then she did look at him. A huge mistake. He was absolutely gorgeous. His long black hair hung loose next to his face. His dark
eyes glittered in the light of the street lamp overhead. There was a slight bruising along one pronounced cheekbone, something she’d normally stand on her tiptoes to kiss. He wore a faded leather bomber jacket, her favorite. It made him look dangerous. And she’d always liked that. Until now.
Wrapping her arms around herself as if to provide some kind of protection, she regarded him sadly. “How long do
you expect me to wait for you, Zane? How long is it going to take for you to change?”

His jaw muscles bunched. The Native American ancestry he shared with his brother Koda had never been more marked. He looked dark and sexy, and more than a little angry.

About the Author:

For Kaylie Newell, writing ranks right up there with the things she loves most in life- falling somewhere behind her family, but ahead of Bradley Cooper (which says a lot).  She fell in lust with the romance genre when she was about thirteen and began sneaking her mother’s paperbacks from the bedside table.  After acne, college, marriage and kids, she decided to take a crack at writing one herself.  Turned out to be the best adventure she’s ever taken.  When she’s not dreaming up her next book, she’s usually eating chocolate or walking the family mutt.  In that order.

Excerpt

Rain spattered the windows of the café, mist making the sunlight bleak. At a table by the wall a man was sitting with a breakfast tray, a small stack of paper on the seat beside him, oblivious to the sideways glances given by the other customers. His messy beard, tousled brown hair and heavy duffel coat gave him the appearance of a slightly cleaned-up vagrant.
“This place is too expensive.” Astri Ingebrigtsen dropped her food on the table and sat down across from him, throwing her dark hair back out of her face. “At this price these eggs should be gold-plated.”
“Get Micke to pay.” Otto grunted, looking down as he dug through his paperwork. “He wanted to stop here.”
“I did. He moaned.”
Otto rolled his eyes just as Micke appeared beside him, breakfast in hand. Without a word Micke picked up the papers then dumped them unceremoniously on Otto’s tray before sitting down with his own.
“Paying for Lise’s too?” Astri asked casually.
“Get lost,” Micke snapped.
As Lise joined them with her own food, Astri turned her attention to her breakfast, smiling to herself. Micke was so easy to wind up.
But God, it had been a miserable week. She cast a rueful glance out of the window to where their trailers sat in the car park, each attached to a Jeep. They were a necessity when they were on a job that required travel, but try as they might, it was impossible to keep them properly warm inside, even with the help of space heaters and extra blankets.
And this had been a long job. Traveling every day, out hunting every damned night. She was beginning to think it would never be over.
Otto was spreading a map out on the windowsill, eating his svele one-handed as he ran a finger along the road markings. The shrill ring of a mobile phone cut through the air and he cursed, dropping his fork and burrowing his hand into his coat pocket.
“Otto here.” He paused. “Not yet. We left Trondheim this morning.”
Astri exchanged glances with Lise. This sounded important.
“We should get there around two. We’ve booked ahead. Tell him to wait in our cabin.” Otto hung up the phone and eyed Astri and Lise, who looked back at him innocently.
“That was Gunther. Our new addition will be meeting us in Orkanger.”
“What did you say his name was?” Lise asked through a mouthful of bread.
“Kai. Kai Amundsen.” Otto glared at Micke, who had let out a dismissive snort. “Enough, Micke.”
“We don’t need more people.” Micke twisted in his seat to face Otto, his mouth twisted in disgust. “Too many of us attracts attention. And we don’t need a greenhorn holding us back.”
“We’ve been over this. We need his research to capture it.” Otto held up a hand to forestall any further response. “This is not negotiable. Eat.”
“He’s right, Micke,” Lise cut in. “We’ve been chasing it for weeks. This could mean we finally catch it.”
Micke slammed his fist on the table, making the cutlery jump. “I do not need some college student to tell me how to do my job. When he’s never in his life caught a tr—”
“Micke!”
About to snap back at Astri, Micke caught her eye and shut his mouth. Astri hastily scanned the room to see if anyone had overheard.
It didn’t seem like it. A few heads had turned at his outburst, but apparently nobody had picked up on that last dangerous word.
