Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Synopsis:

A Love and War stand Alone
These DO NOT NEED to be read in any order

I crashed and opened my eyes . . . there you were, fierce and protective, and I knew . . . I just knew it was you all along.

Ex-Marine Trent Reed has been shot at, in a coma, and placed in war zones, but when his best friend calls in a favor, he is faced with the most dangerous situation yet—to be the best man. Trent’s turbulent past with races other than his own taints his view on the interracial marriage, and he’s none too happy to deal with the ill-tempered maid of honor. To accept the position means understanding that his friend is soon to be out of his life—for good.

Tough-girl Teal Lofton has struggled all of her adult life, from her weight to the color of her skin holding her back in work and love. When she agrees to be the maid of honor in her friend’s wedding, a hormonal bride and a jerk of a best man who she is strangely, yet wildly, attracted to, amplify those struggles.

As tensions and tempers rise, Trent disappears with the wedding rings and Teal braves a snowstorm to bring them back, determined to fix yet another problem. But a tragic accident brings together the unlikely pair, forcing them to face the prejudices of their pasts. In doing so, Trent and Teal embark on an inevitable course of self-discovery and passion like they’ve never experienced before—until a secret from Trent’s past threatens to destroy it all.

Excerpt

The taste of metal filled Trent’s mouth, along with the sound of bees swarming in his head. Confusion took over, before the muffled sounds of a man speaking pulled Trent from his darkened haze. He forced himself to crack open his eyes and a sharp pain shot through his head.
Heavy snow fell around him, yet not his face. Opening his eyes wider he could see the blurred face of a man holding something over Trent’s head. He realized the covering was meant to protect him from the snow. Trent moved gingerly, but his arms felt weighted and his body barely responded to his commands. The voice came again, a bit clearer than before.
Trent had momentarily forgotten where he was and what was going on. His mind raced with visions of war and his body ached. He worried about the effects of PTSD in situations like this. Luckily, he didn’t have to think about that too long. Memory of what actually happened popped into his consciousness and his eyes shot open with worry.
“There you are.” An unfamiliar voice said calmly. Trent’s eyes took a moment to focus. The face of his neighbor came into view. “Don’t move just yet. You might have broken something.” The man looked him over as if he could tell just by looking.
Trent didn’t feel any pain, just confusion. “W—where’s the woman?” Trent asked, ignoring the man’s futile attempts to get him to stay down. He turned over and propped himself up on his bruised elbow. Looking around, he searched for a flash of gold dress and dark skin. His head ached and whatever wounds he’d sustained finally started to make their presence known. He shook his head, but it cleared nothing and only left him a bit dizzy.
The man pointed over past the driveway. “Your woman is over there. My wife and I didn’t want to move her. You were out for about five minutes.” Trent listened as he struggled to stand. He glanced over, only seeing a bright red blur in the darkness. “I still think you should stay down until a rescue squad gets here.”
Trent shook his head, meaning to tell the man no, but this time, he effectively shook off some of the fog. He stood on unsteady feet and glanced over to the only road leading to their cabins. “Look over there.” He pointed. “How are they even going to get in here if they make it here at all?” He stumbled over to the woman in a bright red coat. As he got closer, he saw Teal on the ground covered up, but still unconscious. The woman held a phone to her ear, but was silent as if she were on hold.
As each second passed, the fog in Trent’s head lessened and he was more aware of how serious their situation was becoming the longer Teal didn’t wake up. Thoughts swarmed his head, spurning him into action. He needed to get her inside, but moving her would be tricky.
Behind him, the man walked over and spoke to his wife. “What’d they say?”
The woman looked up with a sullen look on her face. “Roads are closed, the snow is too heavy.” She looked worriedly at Trent as the harsh cold wind whipped her hair into her face. “They can’t get anyone out to us yet.”
Regardless, Trent understood that in Teal’s situation, she couldn’t stay lying in the snow. He turned to the man. “Help me get her inside and on the bed. I’ll start a fire and warm her up.” He glanced around, searching for something to move her with. His body shook and sharp pains and aches assaulted him whenever he moved.
The woman looked warily at Trent. “Are you sure we should move her?” She glanced at her husband with a frown. Trent didn’t want to move her and possibly cause more injury, but as it seemed, rescue was most likely not coming anytime soon and Teal would freeze to death out here. The thought made his chest ache. He’d served in the military and there was no such thing as an ex-soldier. The things you learned lasted a lifetime and he been in worse predicaments than this. There was no way he’d let her die out here alone in the damned cold. The man seemed to agree with Trent’s unspoken thoughts and moved to Teal’s feet.
Still she shook her head, undeterred. “Honey, I’m not sure about this. I think moving her could mess with any possible injury. I mean, what if she has a broken spine or something?” The woman glanced back down at Teal and took her hand in hers.
Trent understood her fear, as it was his as well. But he had a plan. “Sir,” he called to the man.
“Lee. Call me Lee.”
Trent nodded. “I can move her, but I need a flat sturdy surface, like a door or table, I only have one door in my cabin and I can’t remove the entrance . . .”
“Lee,” the woman called to her husband and threw keys to him. “Go to the cabin and break down the bathroom door and bring it out.”
Trent raised a brow at the force in her tone. Thankfully, Lee didn’t think twice, and he took off in a mad dash toward the cabin. Trent used this time to stagger inside his own cabin, grabbing all the sheets off the bed and heading back to Teal. He placed them around her as best he could.
Logan was going to flat out kill Trent when this was over. He felt her pulse and it beat strong in her chest. Her breathing was also steady, and there were no head injuries other than the gash on her forehead. It wouldn’t even need stitches. If they were lucky, she’d just been knocked out and would wake up fine.

Excerpt

“I don’t believe this,” Sidna said flatly. “You’re saying he’s staying on as your slave willingly? And he’s also willing to wear the collar—the one that almost killed him?”
“He is,” Trin said steadily, looking at Thrace though she was answering the medic. “Thrace volunteered to wear the pain collar so that you and the rest of the crew would know he is not a threat. I have the remote and I will use it if it looks like he is trying to harm any one of us.”
“I would expect nothing less,” Thrace said stolidly. He took a deep breath. There was nothing to do but get it over with. Taking a step towards her, he fell to his knees on the cold metal floor at her feet. “Mistress,” he said, his voice coming out hoarse and gravely. “I submit to you and offer my neck for your collar. I will serve you until I die or until you set me free.”
Trin cleared her throat. “And you submit to my collar and my will of your own volition?”
“I do,” Thrace said hoarsely. “I will belong to you body and soul. I will protect you with my life, shield you from harm in times of danger, and pleasure you in times of peace. To the last drop of my blood, I…am…yours.”
Those words…the words he had always refused to say. He said them to Trin now. They brought back more memories—an evil tide of poison from the past that threatened to drown him. Say it! the Master screamed. Say that you’re mine! Fucking say it, boy!
Thrace bowed his head, trying to drive the tide back, to banish the past. Gods…
Thrace…” Trin reached out tentatively and stroked his hair. It was a gentle touch—the same way she might soothe an animal on the verge of panic. Thrace found himself soothed by it now.
He couldn’t help himself—the memories had undone him and for a long moment he couldn’t push them back. He leaned into her touch, looking for reassurance, needing her scent and the warmth of her hand to know it was safe to do this…safe to submit to the collar he had so hated in the past.
Not the Master, he told himself over and over. She’s not the Master.
Why the fuck are you putting yourself through this? demanded the sarcastic little voice in his brain. Why endure the pain and the rush of bad memories? Is it really just to pay a debt?
Again, he had no answers. He simply held still under her touch, breathing her warm, feminine scent and trying to calm his screaming nerves. Even surrounded by B’Rugh’s goons he hadn’t felt this fucked up—this threatened. In a moment he would be able to bury the past again. But for now, it was all he could do to hold still and let this happen, all he could do to submit to the collar for her sake though he still didn’t know why exactly he was doing it.
Thrace,” Trin whispered again and her hand moved lower, caressing his cheek, cupping his jaw.
A warm current seemed to flow through him at the skin-to-skin touch and at last his labored breathing became easier.
Not the Master…The past began to recede.
“Are you sure you can do this?” Trin asked in a low voice, for his ears alone.
Thrace looked up at her. “I have to,” he murmured. “It’s the only way you can trust me.”
She looked troubled but at last she nodded.
“True. All right—here goes.”
Thrace held his breath and closed his eyes as she fastened the hated black collar around his throat, making sure it wasn’t too tight as she fit it in place. Not the Master…not the Master, not the Master…
“There.” She said at last, cupping his cheek again. “It’s done.”
“Thank you, Mistress.”
Thrace could barely get the words out. Turning his face, he pressed a kiss to the palm of her hand. It was the final gesture of submission—kissing the hand that collared him.
He knew it was the correct gesture because it was what the old Master had demanded of him. But he had never given the old Master that satisfaction or said the words he had spoken to Trin, no matter how much the Master shouted and raved and hit. No matter what…other things he did.
Now he gave the gesture of submission to Trin without hesitation, just as he had given the words.
Why?
He still didn’t know.

Excerpt

“Owen,” he muttered and then his voice gained strength as he straightened and lifted his eyes to hers. He looked as if he was gauging her again, studying her reactions. “Owen Nightingale.”
Cait could see why he had been watching her closely now, eyeing her like the hunter he was, no doubt putting everything about her to memory so he could note it all down later.
Including how she reacted to hearing that he was a member of the most illustrious hunter family to have ever existed.
Did he think she would turn tail and run on hearing that he was a Nightingale?
She wasn’t afraid. She was impressed. The perfect and handsome Owen had just become a shade more perfect for her.
“I’m Cait, with a C.” She twisted their hands again and shook his.
He raised a dark eyebrow. “Like Cat, with an I?”
She shrugged and nodded. “My parents thought they were being cute.”
Owen looked her over, a leisurely raking of his eyes from her head to her toes that set her on fire.
His expression gave nothing away, not a single thought or feeling.
“Maybe they thought you were cute and deserved a cute name to match.”
Gods, she wanted to ask what he thought but bit her tongue to stop herself. “Most people don’t think hellcats are cute.”
“I’m not most people.” That flicker of wickedness was back in his eyes as he gave her another once over. “But I can’t really judge whether you’re cute or not since I’ve never seen a hellcat in their true form.”
Cait narrowed her gaze on him and shot him a sultry smile of her own. “I know you’re dying to see me in just my fur.”
He looked as if he might blush, but rallied and fixed her with hungry eyes that left her in zero doubt of his desire. “I wouldn’t say no to seeing you naked.”
She flushed all over, hot from head to toe at just the thought of getting naked with him. She leaned closer, reached her right hand out, and stroked her fingers down his chest. It was as hard as steel beneath the soft material of his black shirt. She heated further, burning hotter as she raced to imagine just how good he would look naked, that honed body on display for her hungry gaze to devour.
Cait wrestled for control over herself and won, refusing to let him fluster her when she was trying to fluster him.
She tilted her head to one side and looked deep into his piercing green eyes. “What’s your view on interspecies relationships? You must like tangling with other species since you’re a hunter.”
His sensual lips quirked into another smile. “I’ve tangled with many species… but never with a hellcat.”
“No?” Cait leaned closer, feeling a little breathless as she narrowed the distance between them. “You don’t know what you’re missing.”
Owen mirrored her, moving closer, his heat washing over her and his heart thumping like a drum in her head, a beat hers tried to match.
“I think I do know.” He raked his dark gaze over her again and scrubbed a hand down over his mouth. “But I wouldn’t say no to finding out.”
Her heart fluttered again and she wriggled on her seat, tempted to take him up on that offer. She needed to do some business with him first though. Pleasure could come later.
He was a Nightingale. The Nightingale. The infamous Owen. Last hunter of his bloodline.
Her best shot at survival.
“I have an offer you can’t resist.” She slipped her fingers between the buttons of his black shirt and drew him closer still. “I need you to do a job for me.”
A brief flicker of disappointment crossed his handsome face before his expression hardened, turning too business-like for her. She hadn’t meant to douse the fire that had been burning between them, not completely. She had only meant to dial it back a few degrees, from inferno to wildfire, for as long as it took to convince him to take a job from her.
Cait rubbed the material of his shirt between her fingers and thumb, her eyes holding his, even when she accidentally on purpose shifted her hand forwards an inch, bringing the backs of her fingers into contact with his bare chest beneath his shirt. His eyes instantly darkened again, the fire flaring back into life in them.
Just the way she liked it.
She was beginning to crave that way he looked at her, as if he might die if he didn’t get a taste of her soon.
“You can name your price.” She slipped her fingers deeper into his shirt and pulled him closer, so their faces were only inches apart and an urge to kiss him filled her again. His eyes dropped to her lips and they parted, anticipation curling through her as a voice deep in her heart begged him to kiss her instead. “I have plenty of money.”
His gaze turned hooded. “What if I don’t want money from you?”
She swallowed hard and her courage faltered. “I’m not sure. I’m not the sort to turn tricks for anything.”
Not even her life.
She couldn’t blame him for putting it out there though. The heat between them was intense, stoked mostly by her and her flirting, and he could probably tell she was close to crawling onto his lap and rubbing herself against him. She frowned at that. What was it about this dark hunter that had her itching for a taste of him and unable to deny the urges running rampant through her?
He was gorgeous, and radiated danger at an intoxicating level, and she always had like men with secrets.
“I wasn’t talking about sex,” he murmured, loud enough for her sensitive hearing to pick up even with the music pounding through the busy club. His green gaze lifted from her lips to lock with hers. “I was talking about you shifting. I want to see you… I need to see you.”
Fire blazed through her, heat so intense she couldn’t contain it. It scalded her cheeks, sparked by what he had said and the earnest desire in his eyes, a look that backed up his words, instilling them with the need and want he had mentioned.
Cait nodded. “You’ll get to see me in my cat form, and I’ll pay you… ten grand… if you do this job for me.”
He looked satisfied with that offer. “And the job is?”
She opened her mouth and then closed it again when a trickle of fear ran through her, doubts surfacing as she realised what she was asking him to do. She didn’t want the male hellcat after her anymore, she wanted him dealt with, but how far was she willing to go to achieve that? The male was strong and determined. What if he hurt Owen? What if he killed him? Could she live with herself knowing that she had gotten the man sitting in front of her killed?
Owen sighed. “I’ve seen that look before. Believe me… you’re not the first to wonder whether I’m up to the task… and believe me… you won’t be the first I prove wrong when I’m the last man standing.”
The venom in his tone and the determination that flashed in his green eyes told her that he was a man who didn’t like having his abilities questioned. She hadn’t meant to anger him but she had clearly done just that by pausing to think over what she was asking him to do, and she hadn’t even done it because she doubted his abilities.
She had done it because she feared having to watch him die.
She managed a half smile. “I don’t doubt you’re up to whatever task you set your mind to, Owen… but I’m guessing you’ve never fought a hellcat before?”
His left eyebrow rose. “Another hellcat?”
She nodded. “A male. Let’s just say he thinks like the rest of his kind and believes I ought to just hurl myself at his feet and be his breeding bitch… and I’m of the opinion he can go fuck himself.”
His eyebrow dropped and both of them dipped low above eyes that only grew darker when she took a deep breath and tugged the right side of her corset up to reveal the bruise on her ribs. The blow that had caused it had knocked the wind out of her and had pushed her close to shifting from the pain.
“Are they broken?” Owen reached out to touch the bruise but she dropped her top and smoothed it back into place to stop him, afraid of how she might react if he laid his hands on her.
She wasn’t sure she would be able to stop herself from touching him back and from there it was only a brief hop to making out with him right here in Underworld and right where everyone could watch. She wouldn’t care about the audience either. The passion and need boiling within her were so intense that once she started with Owen, she wouldn’t be able to stop until she had burned them out, and probably worn Owen out too.
“No,” she said when he lifted green eyes to meet hers again, seeking an answer. “Fractured… but healing.”
“When did this happen?” He looked back down at her side, his gaze so intense she felt sure it would burn a hole through her corset.
“Around two hours ago… in an alley near here. I was ambushed… we fought… I escaped.”
Owen frowned and lifted his eyes back to her face, a beautiful dark edge to them, one that promised death to whoever had hurt her. “And the male?”
She slid her gaze off to her left, towards the shadowy corner where he still lurked, watching her with Owen.
“Let’s just say he’s too close to me for my comfort.”
Owen looked out of the corner of his eye in the direction she had and the dark slashes of his eyebrows dipped lower. Cait had thought his eyes had held a promise of death before. She had been wrong. The look that had been in them a moment ago was hearts and flowers compared with the one that filled his green eyes now, turning them stormy and deadly.
Cait told herself that she was doing the right thing. Owen Nightingale was infamous. The best hunter there was and a specialist in shifters. If anyone could help her, it was him. He was her best shot at freedom. Her only hope.
She waited for him to look back at her before she poured all of that hope into a question that would pin it all on him.
“Will you take my job?”

Synopsis:

Find the strongest man there. Give yourself to him in return for protection. It’s the only way you’ll ever survive.

Convicted of a minor crime, Riana is sentenced to a prison planet—a dark primitive hold filled with convicts vying for power. Her only chance of survival is with Cain, a mysterious loner who has won his territory in the prison through intelligence and brute strength. Sex is all she has to offer, so she uses it. She’s under no delusions here. No one is ever released, and no one ever escapes. Survival is all she can hope for—until Cain.

An earlier version of this book was published under the same title and a different penname by Ellora’s Cave. It has since been substantially revised and expanded.

Excerpt

“Is your face okay?” she asked weakly, as she noticed him wiping away the blood.
“Fine.”
He sure wasn’t much of a conversationalist.
“I’m Riana.” She had no idea what she was supposed to do. Her knees were shaky, so she sank down to perch on the edge of the bed.
“Okay.”
She blinked. He wasn’t even going to tell her his name?
“Thanks,” she began, trying to speak clearly despite her nerves, “For your help. I mean, for…”
He turned around and stared down at her.
The man was pure physicality. His closely shaved dark hair emphasized the sculpted curve of his skull. His olive skin—it must be natural since there was no sun to tan his skin here—was covered with a sheen of perspiration. He was wearing the kind of sleeveless t-shirt her grandmother had called a “wife-beater,” and it showed off his impressive shoulders and the rippling muscles of his arms. His well-worn trousers were slung low on lean hips. His large build was natural too and—although he was obviously in excellent shape—he didn’t look fake or overblown like Asp.
His features were too starkly chiseled, and his expression too impassive to be labeled traditionally handsome. But power and masculinity radiated off him in waves.
“Do you think I helped you out of the goodness of my heart?”
It was the longest sentence she’d heard him utter, and it made her heart leap into her throat. “Uh, no, but I’m still grateful.”
“No gratitude. I’m getting something in return.” His blue eyes seemed to impale her. “Right?”
She gulped. “Right.”
Never for a minute had she hoped he would generously give her a pass. Of course, she was going to have to fuck him.
He took three steps over until he was standing next to the bed, directly in front of where she was sitting. “Take off your shirt.”
Riana gasped and darted her eyes over to the bars of the cell. The other prisoners were still milling outside, some blatantly staring at the two of them inside.
He followed her look. “There’s no privacy here. You’ll get used to it.”
When he didn’t say anything else, she realized she was going to have to deal with the embarrassment. With trembling fingers, she started to undo the buttons on the front of her shirt.
The man watched her. His face didn’t change, but she thought she saw something almost hungry in his gaze when she dared to meet his eyes.
When she’d unbuttoned her shirt, she slowly pushed it off over her shoulders, left only in her stretchy camisole.
“That one too,” the man directed, his voice even lower and thicker than before.
Might as well get it over with. Riana turned on the bed so she wouldn’t expose her breasts to any passing ogler and pulled her camisole off over her head.

Excerpt

I knew this wasn't going to be the typical meeting with Julian Bright when, instead of the usual political organ-grinders at the campaign headquarters, I found a soccer mom duct taped to a chair, foaming at the mouth. Her grunting and growling echoed off the bare sheetrock walls of Julian's office, vacant except for the three of us.
I peeked through the blinds covering the locked storefront to make sure none of volunteers were back from the morning rounds. Satisfied we were alone, I turned to Julian.
He waved his arm at the woman in a lazy circle. "So, this is why I called."
"Who is she?"
"Her name is Amy Mancuso. You know her?"
I shook my head.
"She's a volunteer. Her team was working Cold Spring by Loyola when she started swearing and spitting at the residents. By the time her team captain called me, she'd kicked someone's dog. Terrier, I think. Or one of those purse dogs."
I winced. "Remind me not to hand out yard signs for you. Jesus."
"It's not like we do background checks on volunteers. I figured she probably missed some meds or something."
"But you called me instead of the paramedics."
"Right."
"Why?" I asked as I took a step toward her.
Amy's grunting halted as she straightened in her chair. Her head swiveled slowly in my direction, and her eyes sent the creeping chills up my neck.
With a nerve-rattling tone she growled, "Is that Dorian Lake I smell?"
I'd never enjoyed the sound of my own name less.
Julian turned a shoulder to me and whispered, "That's why."
"Gotcha."
I slowly approached Amy, pulling my pendulum from my jacket pocket in a slow, non-threatening motion. Last thing I needed at that moment was to send a crazy person into a panic. I assumed she was crazy. My pendulum would determine whether she was unnaturally energized or the usual cat-shaving flavor of lunatic.
Her eyes were dilated; her mouth twisted into the most unsettling smile one could imagine on the face of an otherwise average woman.
"Have we met?"
"Poor little Dorian lost his soul."
Okay, this was probably a legitimate problem.
I dangled the pendulum in front of Amy. The little nugget of copper spun from the end of its chain in a perfectly Newtonian fashion. Nothing pulled it contrary to the laws of Nature. I couldn't even feel a tug on the chain.
She continued, "Lost his soul, he lost his soul. Dropped it down a rabbit hole."
"I suppose you think you're being clever?"
"Is he doomed or is he dead? Will he damn your soul instead?"
This conversation had lost all of its charm.
"Who am I talking to?"
She sucked in a huge gulp of air and craned her neck at a painful angle toward the ceiling. A sick squealing noise leaked from her lips as her arms trembled. When she finally released her breath and sank back down into her chair, she simply chuckled.
"We're going to find it, you know. And when we do, we're going to eat it."
I leaned in as close as I dared and whispered, "If you think I'm afraid of you, then you need to know something. I'm not impressed."
"It won't be long now."
"Did someone send you, or is this just a courtesy call?"
She smirked. "We're going to enjoy this."
I was knitting together a clever response when a loud rip of tape crackled through the room. Her hand slammed up underneath my jaw, fingers clamping around my throat. My head filled with blood, and I tried to cough through the gag reflex. The harder I beat on her hand to let go, the wider that creepy smile got.
