Unknown number. “Hello?”

“Hi Princesa. Have you thought about which book we should write our report about?”

I fight off a small smile. “Did you really have to call me to discuss this right now?”

“Totally did. By the way, you’ll type the report.”

“No I won’t.”

“Let’s talk about it later tonight. You and me.” There’s shuffle behind him and some laughs. “I’ll call you later.”

He hangs up and I stare at the phone for a second. Shaking my head, I search my bag for the list of books Miss Taylor gave us. I scan it, trying to find one we could work on. My mind wanders to the last time I worked on a project. It was with Emilia and it was for History. She’s a total buff and she promised that if I taught her how to land her grand jeté with even more grace, she’d tutor me. It was a week before the accident, and I never managed to teach her. I never took that History test.

I check the time again and my eyebrows draw together. Mama’s not only a bit late. She’s super late.

Where the hell is she?

The World of the Vehicle City Vampires

By Roxanne Rhoads

Hex and the Single Witch: Vehicle City Vampires Book One is paranormal romance/urban fantasy series based in and around my hometown of Flint, Michigan.

The original background for the story came to me while I was driving through downtown Flint one day. After leaving the main strip of Saginaw Street that is the “downtown” area, surrounding areas and neighborhoods look like ghost towns. Businesses are boarded up, empty, and falling apart. Houses are even worse off. There are entire neighborhoods in and around Flint that are completely or almost completely empty. Out of fifty houses two may still have residents.

That’s scary on so many different levels.

Suddenly an idea popped into my head- “what if, after all the humans left, Others started moving in?”

And the basic back story of my series came to life. Flint, Michigan becomes a hotbed of supernatural activity. Ghosts, ghouls, vampires, demons and were-creatures move in and become the majority making the human population the minority.

Most of the remaining humans don’t even realize Others walk among them. A mass Hysteria of the late twentieth century almost eradicated entire species of Others- humans and Others were at war. Causalities were many on both sides. To end the war and stop the Hysteria a mass worldwide spelling was cast that made humans once again lose their memories that Other folk exist. (This spelling was massive, exhausting, and performed by magic wielding Others of many species and broadcast over radio waves, television signals and via satellite to reach as many people around the globe as possible- the spell also has to be maintained periodically)

Most humans think that vampires, were-creatures and all types of Others are just movie magic and works of fiction. The spelling was so successful that Others can now walk openly among the humans and never be suspected of being Other.

The only people that see Others as the beings they really are- are those who have the faintest drop of Other in their blood and those who were so strong willed the spelling didn’t take, and of course teenagers and children who were born after the spelling took place.

The problem with this scenario is that not all Others are harmless, there are those thrive on danger, fear, and despair and revel in destruction.

So to keep the Others in line and keep supernatural crime to a minimum the Preternatural Investigation Team (dubbed the PIT Crew) was created as a special task force for the Flint Police Department.

Recruits for the PIT Crew are either Others or humans that know Others exist.

The main character of my book is Detective Anwyn Rose. She is an Other, a witch to be precise but her magic hasn’t ever been too flashy, however she has the ability to “know” things. Either by touch or just a direct line into someone’s mind, Anwyn is very useful at a crime scene. She can see what happened just by touching the victim or an object at the scene.

Her partner, Detective Mike Malone is human, and not too friendly with the “monsters”. However he has a thing for Anwyn even if technically she could be labeled as one of the “monsters”, but Anwyn has a thing for a vampire, Galen. To Malone a vampire is the worst of all monsters especially when Anwyn’s love interest turns out to be the prime suspect in a string of killings they are investigating.

The whole situation leads to heated arguments, steamy encounters, a lot of misfiring magic- and a hot love triangle.

And all that began with just a drive around Flint one day.
A couple of my previous short stories are set in the same world as the Vehicle City Vampires series and appear in the short story collection Paranormal Pleasures Ten Tales of Supernatural Seduction.

A few of the stories and characters are linked in with the VCV series, particularly the story Renata which is set in Flushing.

I would say Flushing is Flint’s richer, prettier neighbor. The vampire Renata has ties to Markus, who happens to be Detective Mike Malone’s uncle. I can’t divulge much more than that or I would give away plot twists in both Renata and Hex and the Single Witch but I expect Renata, Tony and Markus (all from the story Renata) to make appearances in this new series. Not in Book One other than a quick mention, but possibly in book two.

The Questioning Concubine and Witching You a Merry Christmas are also set in the Vehicle City Vampire World.

My newest book, Paranormal Pleasures II, contains several shorts also set in the Vehicle City Vampires world.
Anwyn Rose, the main character from VCV Hex and the Single Witch even makes an appearance in Underneath the Fangs and My Demon Valentine.
My Demon Valentine also offers a special treat for VCV fans…a couple scenes featuring Anwyn will appear from her point of view in Hex and the City, Vehicle City Vampires Book 2, which is scheduled to be released later this year.
An Unexpected Eveningthis one is set in the VCV world but characters or locations are not mentioned until we get to the second Katerina and Samuel story, Underneath the Fangs.

Samuel is a centuries-old vampire who prefers to be a recluse. He is always afraid of losing control and becoming the monster he once was. Falling in love with a young witch has pushed his boundaries and pulled him out of his comfort zone.

Katerina always encourages Samuel to be more open, to let loose, and to really "live" instead of only existing in the shadows.

One night, he finally grants her wish . . . in ways she never imagined.

Underneath the Fangs- this one brings the location of Flushing into the story, pulls in the P.I.T Crew and Anwyn Rose makes an appearance.

Samuel is being framed for murder. Katerina knows he is not guilty but she has to convince Samuel that he is not a monster and that he is worthy of her love.

Cemetery Seduction- this story is also set in Flushing, in the VCV world, but it is set a little in the future as compared to the VCV novels.

Abby, a half witch, half vampire whose powers go awry in a club, has to run, afraid that the Others, who are policing all human/magick interaction, might put her in jail. She ends up in a cemetery, jumps behind a bush and lands right on top of a very sexy ghost hunter.

No Place I'd Rather Be – this one is set in the VCV world a bit into the future, they are detectives and consultants- part of the P.I.T Crew but we haven’t seen them in the VCV books yet. Mike Malone will hire and recruit them in the VCV books later.

Sonora is torn between a human and a vampire. How can she choose between the man who makes her feel safe and the vampire that makes her blood race? Sonora prays to the Goddess for guidance while harboring secret desires that her broody vampire, Brom, and her brawny human, Avery, can get past their jealousy and be willing to do more than just share the witch in the middle.

Can the Goddess grant Sonora's wish, or will she be stuck making an impossible choice?

Contains m/f/m and m/m

My Demon Valentine- Elita is Anwyn’s cousin. Her story was featured in the first Paranormal Pleasures collection in the short, The Questioning Concubine. This second short story featuring Elita ties directly into the Vehicle City Vampires world and features two scenes that will be retold from Anwyn’s point of view in the upcoming book, Hex and the City.

Elita wants to give her demon boyfriend a Valentine’s Day to remember. Connor was built for giving pleasure but Elita wants to turn the tables on that.

This time the pleasure will be all his.

MIA

Trust me to pick the only bad boy on the planet with a conscience.

I didn't know what else to do to get Kye to sleep with me, bar strip and run around the tennis court naked.

"This isn't a good idea," he mumbled, sounding as tortured as I felt.

Good. Because if we didn't do this within the next five minutes, I'd combust from wanting him.

I pressed against him one last time, wishing I had the guts to touch him there. "We either do this, or you're going to spend the night under a cold shower or working off your frustration on the court."

The moment I said it, I had an idea. A brilliant one.

Trying to hide a triumphant smirk was almost impossible. "How about this. We play one game of tennis. I win, we have sex. You win, we don't."

His eyes narrowed, sizing me up. "You said you played badly, so what's the catch?"

"No catch." I shrugged, mustering my best innocent expression. "Come on. What have you got to lose?"

Apart from the game, because if there's one thing I knew about tennis, it was how to not play fair. I was average on the court. But I'd once watched Dani bring a guy to his knees by seducing him one shot at a time.

Now it was my turn to see if I had what it took to distract a gun player long enough that he fudged four points so we ended up in bed.

"You're giving in too easily." He shook his head. "I don't trust you."

"Shouldn't that be my line?" I smiled and flipped the catch on the storage box tucked outside the fence.

"Fine, we'll play one game, then I'm heading to bed," he muttered, rummaging through the rackets before he found one he fancied: testing the weight in his hand, fiddling with the strings, inspecting it.

"That's what I'm hoping for," I murmured, flashing him a smug grin when he glared at me.

Wolf's Bane Tour, Excerpt & Giveaway!

Wolf’s Bane
Demimonde
Book 3
Ash Krafton

Genre: urban fantasy

Book Description:

Since becoming oracle to the demivampire two years ago, advice columnist Sophie has battled werewolves and survived a vampire attack (or two). However, not only was she powerless to save her lover Marek when he slipped to the brink of evolution, she also witnessed his transformation into a falcon, the symbol of Horus United.

Sophie’s quest to save Marek is further complicated when rock star Dierk Adeluf – who also happens to be the king of the Werekind – invites her backstage after a concert. Just when it seems she will find respite from heartache, Sophie is bitten by a werewolf and Dierk decides she is destined to be his queen.

Sophie is caught between the demivamps she loves and the Were who commands her to love him. Throw in his jealous wanna-be girlfriend—a true bitch if ever there was one—and an ambush by witches, and there you have the big mess that Sophie calls her life. And, hello? Her soul mate is still a bird.

She’s supposed to be the girl with all the answers, but Sophie needs more than a little advice–she needs divine intervention.

Excerpt

“What are you doing?” Dierk sniffed at the air around me, frowning. “You are human, yet you command these demivampire. You wear their power. Are you a succubus?”

“A what?” I knew what a succubus was. At least, Syfy's version. If that's what he meant, I had better be hearing wrong or I was going to club him, superstar or not.

His lip curled. Apparently, that’s exactly what he meant. “A vampire whore.”

A condemnation if I ever heard one. I’d known vampire whores and being placed in the same category as Donna made me want to spit. “Is that what you think I am?”

He shrugged, seeming very comfortable with hurling insults. “Perhaps.”

“How dare you!” I raised my hand, intending to slap off his smug expression.

He grabbed my hand before I could strike and held it firmly. Although it didn't hurt, I still didn't like it. I twisted, trying to pull out of his grasp.

“I do not mean to insult you,” he said. “But I am Wolf. This is our world. Don't blame me because my brethren are not overly fond of your demivampire pets.”

“Look. Let's just agree to disagree. Okay?” I struggled to yank my hand loose. His half-smile made me furious. “You don't like my friends. I don't like yours. Let's just say so long and good night and let me go.”

“I cannot.” He lowered our hands to his chest and I could feel his heart beating. “There is still the matter of the Leni.”

“Which is?” His tone made me wary. I was suspicious of foreign words and foreign traditions. I was still trying to figure out the DV, for crying out loud, even with the Sophia giving me an inside track.

“The Leni is a ritual of destiny. The sensation you experience when we are separated is the sign of the soul-bond. The Leni will determine if it is a true bond.”

“A true bond meaning...?”

“It's a mating ritual, you stupid human. Honestly, Dierk, this one? She isn't worthy of ein König!” I didn't have to see the owner of the ugly voice to know it was my new BFF. “She is an insult to Wölfe. An insult to our Leni. She makes mockery of legend.”

Not that I wanted to agree with the mean bitch, but still. “Dierk, I didn't come back here for a mating ritual.”

“Can you deny what you felt when you walked away from me?” His tone was not bossy. It was tender, soft and gravelly. “I know what I felt.”

“Dierk, you must be mistaken,” Cacilia insisted.

“Cassy.” Dierk's voice raised in dark warning. “Now is not the time.”

“It's never the time,” she said, her words running together in a growl. “I will not abide this.”

Pushing aside the people who stood in her way, she stomped out.

“Look, Dierk,” I said. There was something big going on with that woman. I more than suspected the entire drink-down-the-back thing was in retaliation for Dierk speaking to me at the bar. “I don't want to cause problems with your girlfriend.”

He glanced in the direction she had gone. “Cacilia is not my girlfriend.”

“Neither am I.”

“True.” His half-smile deepened and took on genuine expression. “But you may turn out to be so much more.”

“Do I have any choice?”

“Destiny is not a choice, my dear.”

Ugh. Dear? “This isn't my destiny. I've already got one.”

“We will see.” He half-turned and called out: “Clear the room.”

Immediately, several large men, some of whom I recognized as the lovely gentlemen who’d asked me about a missing wallet, began ushering people toward the doors. Murmurs of disappointment trailed in their wake. Several DV spikes, questioning, suspicious.

It was the DV that were being shown out. The people I’d identified as humans, too, I noticed. Alarmed by this, I hesitantly peeked my power out.

Only Were remained in the room, and me. The sudden vacuum made me suck in a hard breath. When the doors closed with a boom, Dierk turned his attention back to me.

Gently, he raised my captive hand to his mouth and I felt the scrape of new beard mingling with the softness of his lips. It was a very courtly gesture and I didn't appreciate it one damn bit.

“Destiny…” His voice carried to the corners of the room. The gathered people and wolves held collective breaths, me included. “Determines the path of the stars and the cycle of the moon. We can deviate from our destinies no easier than the moon or the stars can from theirs. I, Dierk Adeluf, son of Schatten, der König von Wölfenkinder, invoke the Leni to determine if it is destiny that our soul-bond become life-bond.”

Life bond? My eyes must have bulged with the disbelief I struggled to contain. Oh no, he doesn't --

Before I could protest, he thrust our hands out and down to our sides.

A wolf bit into my hand.

The attack was silent. The pain was splintering. The stars and their destinies exploded behind my eyes.

I rocked on my feet. Heat traveled up my arm, filling my head and squeezing out my breath. My knees buckled once, twice. I tumbled forward into Dierk’s open arms. He’d been waiting for me to fall and he caught me, gently sinking to his knees with me, cradling me to his chest.

As the room and the light and the sound faded into the haze of heat and pain, the last thing I saw was Dierk's face and his damnable half-smile.

Excerpt

He unlocked the doors and they slid in. It was cold inside, but he started the engine to let warm air filter in. The familiar smell of Luke—and even the old cigarette smoke smell—comforted her and she breathed it in greedily.

“Stay with me again tonight,” he requested quietly, his hands resting on the steering wheel, letting the windows defrost.

Her head snapped to him. Deep down, she wanted to. So very much. But…Luke Branford was worming his way into her heart, slowly but steadily. She feared he’d make a permanent home if she kept him too close.

Biting her lip, her indecision shone on her features. “I don’t know, Luke.”

“Stay,” he said again. “I don’t want to sleep in that bed with your smell all over the sheets, knowing you’re not there to keep me warm.”

Melt.

Her breath whooshed out of her body. She could already feel herself starting to cave. The thought of curling into his body tonight was heavenly. But she still shook her head. “We have work tomorrow. I don’t have my work clothes.”

“We’ll stop by your apartment tonight so we don’t have to in the morning,” he answered simply. Everything was simple for him. She liked that about him. “Stay with me, Kate.” He switched tactics. “Just give me a ‘yes’ or a ‘no.’”

She stared at him, feeling warmth seep back into her flesh. The windows were almost completely defrosted, so he’d either take her home and say goodbye for the night or they’d go back to Luke’s. The thought of going back to her apartment left her cold. She wanted to smell sage and cedar wood when she drifted off to sleep tonight.

She made her decision.

“Yes.”

Taking the one thing she treasures most—their son—begins a cat and mouse relationship spanning two planets and costing possibly his life.

Elektra will stop at nothing to save her son but can she overcome Brede’s twisted idea of vengeance?

Excerpt

Elektra landed on her knees on the ancient stone cobbled sidewalks and used the wall of Narita's edifice to help herself stand. The pain, now near unbearable, shrieked when she touched the blackened and bruised flesh to anything including cloth and she struggled against the throbbing crowds to make her way toward the only place she thought to go for help.
"Please Mahmud I don't want to lose my arm. You have to help me," she stood before the self-appointed doctor of the proscribed citizens. He inspected it and then shook his head.
"I can do nothing for you," he said. "It is already too far gone by now. Even should you sit in the sun for five days it would be no help."
"I'll get you money. Whatever you want, I'll get it. Please, save my hand, please?"
He shook his head again sorrowfully.
"I can do nothing. This does not need my type of medicine. You must ask the mechanical doctors, those with science and not nature. I am sorry I cannot help you Elektra."
Crying she stood against the wall of the crooked street, thinking what she might pay to those who if they could build space machines, could build anything. She slid down the wall and sat on her haunches against it sobbing.
A shadow fell across her, changing the scorching temperature a degree. She opened her eyes and a man knelt before her. He took her arm and gently inspected it.
"I can give you a new arm and hand," he said. "But you must pay what I ask." He stared directly into her eyes. "You will have a new arm—a new hand—better than before. But you must pay the price."
"What is it you want?" Elektra asked, still gasping in pain.
"Alekzander Brede."
