Synopsis:
Since the age of ten, Mia has lived under the iron fist of the fundamentalist preacher who lured her mother away to join his fanatical family of followers. In Edenton, a supposed “Garden of Eden” deep in the South American jungle, everyone follows the Reverend’s strict but arbitrary rules—even the mandate of whom they can marry. Now sixteen, Mia dreams of slipping away from the armed guards who keep the faithful in, and the curious out. When the rebellious and sexy Gabriel, a new boy, arrives with his family, Mia sees a chance to escape.

But the scandalous secrets the two discover beyond the compound’s façade are more shocking than anything they ever imagined. While Gabriel has his own terrible secrets, he and Mia bond together, more than friends and freedom fighters. But is there time to think of each other as they race to stop the Reverend’s paranoid plan to free his flock from the corrupt world? Can two teenagers crush a criminal mastermind? And  who will die in the fight to save the ones they love from a madman who’s only concerned about his own secrets?

Escape from Eden
by Elisa Nader

Review by Scott

4 of 5  Stars

Elisa Nader's Escape from Eden is a action packed YA thriller set in the jungles of South America, and pairs perfectly with other dystopian YA thrillers released this year, particularly Jeff Hirsch's masculine macho cult thriller, The Darkest Path. Like Path, the main character Mia, seeks a way out of the confines of religious life. Strict cult guidelines shape both Path and Eden, and both authors are pluck upon a new strain of the dystopian genre.  Eden features a cute heroine, who has mommy issues (and it’s easy to see why) and along the way becomes close with the handsome rebellious Gabriel, a new addition to Eden's Flock. Like Path, Eden explores heavy concepts, religious control, human slavery, deception, and the mundanity of evil.

Eden's Flock, named after a character, Reverend Eden (the town is Edenton) is like many other cults, separating children from their parents and reinforcing traditional gender roles, and upholding a patriarchy. Reverend Eden is a condensation of so many real and fictional cult leaders; he's easy to hate, and has many henchmen to do his heavy lifting. As with most YA novels, the adults are static characters, Mia's own mother is no different, and like Mia she is also a victim, for Reverend Eden is a slick sadistic prick who deals in flesh, and alters memory and minds in the name of fatherly protection. The newcomer, the troublesome Gabriel discovers Eden's secret, a mirror community, a Ying to Edenton's Yang, where young people are brought drugged to serve the pleasure of the Reverend's customers and contacts, whose involvement hints at the Reverend's long term plans and machinations.

The snappy dialogue is film ready. Gabriel is a likeable rogue and his flirtatious love/hate dynamic with Mia is immensely entertaining. He's handy in a fight as well, and in one particular action sequence serves as Mia's, and her friend, Juanita's savior. But as with most action novels, there is no easy safety. Mia and Gabriel are forced to leave Juanita behind, as well as their innocence as they make their way to San Sebastián and eventually into the Network, a group of people, freedom fighters, trying to bust up the cult of Eden. The Reverend appears kind and caring, but is a psychopath. They have a man on the inside, Dr. Gladstone, an homage to Dr. Livingstone--the famous lost Doc of the early 20th century, and Mia and Gabriel soon find themselves back in Edenton, lost in the tangles of the Reverend’s plot, except this time they are here to save and rescue everyone they can.

Escape from Eden, like most YA novels, relies on a myriad of characters to allow Mia and Gabriel to begin as innocent protagonist and end the novel as experienced "adults." Thankfully, Gabriel and Mia do not suffer horrible transgressions (they suffer plenty), they are spared this as the plot moves quickly and the action unfolds with cinematic pace. Eden's heart is less about religion, and more about freedom, and honesty. In the end when Mia and Gabriel orchestrate the freedom of Edenton from the cult's clutches, they also rip off a veil of denial and deception that has been blinding Edenton's residents for years. The novel isn't about the healing, it's about the action that leads up to the conclusion, which frankly is an emotional knot that Nader could continue to unravel if she chooses; her debut sparkles with intensity. Four Stars.

This book was provided free of charge as part of the tour for an honest review.

Taut blitz, Excerpt, Trailer & Giveaway!

TAUT: The Ford Book by JA Huss
(Rook and Ronin Spin-off)
Published January 20, 2014

Contemporary, Erotic Romance, New-ish Adult

Synopsis:
TAUT IS A STANDALONE NOVEL - you do NOT have to read any of the Rook and Ronin books first.

Ford Aston is known for many things. Being an emotionless, messed up bastard, a freakishly smart social outcast, and a cold, domineering master who keeps "pets" instead of girlfriends.

And after Rook broke his heart, he plans to keep it that way.

Ashleigh is known for nothing, and that's exactly what she's got going for her. She's broke, stranded in the mountains with a three month old baby, and Ford Aston is screwing with her head.

Big. Time.

And she plans to mess with his right back.

It's a coy game at first, filled with flirting, and innuendo--but Ford soon realizes something is not quite right with Ashleigh. In fact, something is seriously, seriously wrong and the closer they get to their final destination, the closer Ford gets to the truth.

One night of devastation, self-loathing, and emptiness turns into the best thing that ever happened to Ford Aston. But one day of in-your-face reality threatens Ashleigh's whole existence.

******
Since A LOT of people have been asking here is the scoop on how this book fits in with my Rook & Ronin series:

Ford first appears in Rook and Ronin #2, Manic. He has a bigger role in Panic, R&R #3, and then he has a novella, called SLACK. This TAUT book is only FORD. It's not really part of the R&R series, as that plot has all been sidelined for this one romance book.

Trailer:

Excerpt

Luck. We are not on speaking terms, luck and I. Because my name is not Ronin Flynn. Luck loves him. Shit, if Ronin was in this predicament, he’d have broken down across from the Four Seasons, they’d tell him they only had the penthouse available, and he could have it for half price since it was sitting empty anyway. They’d send up complimentary fruit baskets and give him free spa passes to ease his worried brow.

I laugh. The sad thing is that it’s closer to the truth than I’d like to admit. Ronin is like… walking magic when it comes to life. Everything he wants, he gets. People love him immediately. They don’t scowl at him because he conjures up memories of almost blowing people up on the golf course or electrocuting boys in the skate park bathroom, or for being the town freak who read every book in the library, even the dictionary and the encyclopedias.

I have had my share of women, albeit on my own very strict no-touching terms. But Ronin has women throwing themselves at him everywhere he goes.

It’s… it’s infuriating. He’s literally a professional liar, for fuck’s sake, and all they see is sweet perfection. But when they look at me they see freak.

I’m a goddamned movie producer. I know famous people. I have a mountain home in Vail, a luxury condo in Denver, and a five-million-dollar monstrosity on Mulholland Drive in Bel Air. I take care of myself, I’m well educated, I’m not bad-looking. I’m sorta hot, actually. I know this,
I have no trouble finding sex when I want it.

And yet I get sluts. I swear. Sluts who don’t even blink when I tell them they can’t touch me.
And Ronin? He gets Rook.

She does not give one fancy fuck what Ronin’s part in our business is. Her exact words. Not one fancy fuck. She loves him, no matter what. Unconditionally. She rode a thousand miles on a motorcycle back to the place where the most horrific things happened to her, stole secret files, and almost got her legs burned off in a house fire to save his professionally lying ass.

And I get no-name pets who want me to bend them over a couch and smack their pussy to make them come.

It’s just… what the fuck? Why? It’s like I have a sign on my fucking head that says I like the weird ones.

Detective Remy Steinberg must return to Louisiana in search of his kidnapped daughter. Can he save her before the swamp swallows her up and he loses any chance at happiness?

Excerpt

Detective Remy Steinberg glared at his phone. No good could come from answering this late on a Friday afternoon, but he still had ten minutes left on his shift. It was one thing to slip out when you finished your work, but to turn his back on a ringing phone . . .
He glanced at his lieutenant’s office. Hard Luck Luchak stared back at him. Damn. Remy gritted his teeth and reached for the phone, hoping like hell he wouldn’t be delayed.
“Homicide, Steinberg.” Maybe it was one of the guys in the back, playing a joke on him.
“Remy?”
Shit. Ball Breaker Number One. What could she want? He’d mailed his child support payment in plenty of time.
“Gabrielle, what is it? I’m just leaving the office.”
“Adrienne didn’t come home from school today.”
He sighed. Poor Adrienne. She never had any freedom.
“For God’s sake, Gabby, she’s sixteen. She can’t be more than an hour late. She’s probably gossiping with a girlfriend. Cut the girl some slack.”
“She’s seventeen, which you’d know if you paid her any attention.”
He knew how old she was, he just didn’t like to think of her as anything except a gap-toothed kid.
Gabby didn’t give him time to answer. “She hasn’t been missing for an hour. She’s been missing for over thirty hours.”
His heart caught in his throat and he couldn’t speak for several seconds. In his job, he’d seen what could befall a young girl in that length of time. He might not be the world’s best dad, but he was her dad just the same.
“What? For over a day? How could you let this happen?” His voice rose and he couldn’t control it, despite the eyes he knew were trained on him. “Why weren’t you keeping track of her? Have you called the police?”
“I’m calling you, aren’t I? You’re the police.” The tremor in her voice might not have been noticeable to anyone else, but he recognized just how scared she was.
“And I’m three hundred miles away.” A good four and a half hours from Comeaux. More like five on a Friday afternoon when half of Houston headed across the state line to do some gambling in Louisiana.
He tightened his grip on the phone. What the hell had happened to his daughter? He wanted to believe she was getting into the same sort of mischief he was at that age, but something in his gut told him her disappearance was far more sinister.

I have always loved reading and if it’s true that God doesn’t subtract the hours you spend reading from your life span, then I should pass the century mark with flying colors. I first tried my hand at writing when I was eleven, but the sun was shining and I had a new bike so that effort was doomed to failure.

I didn’t try writing again until I was well into my sixties. People ask me why I took it up then and my answer is simple, because my husband retired. If you don’t understand, just wait, you will.

Hidden in the labyrinths below, a mysterious masked man has become the master of her desires: a sensual but commanding partner who pushes Christy to the very brink of erotic pleasure…and beyond. No other man can compare. But somewhere, watching from the shadows, a fiercely jealous rival threatens to destroy the erotic secret they share.

Could her masterful lover be capable of murder, and worse? Perhaps it was the thrill of danger that drew Christy to him in the first place—like a moth to the flame—instead of a more conventional romance with the opera house’s handsome benefactor, Roman. For the sake of her sanity, she must at least give Roman a chance. But for the love of her master, she must give in to every wild fantasy, every wicked game, and every whim he commands…

Is Christy prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice? To surrender her heart, her soul, her everything? First she must acknowledge the truth: a woman in love can serve only one master…

Guest post by Jeffe Kennedy

Now that the second episode of my serial novel, Master of the Opera, released last week, it’s been interesting to hear the reader responses.

As a modern, sexier retelling of Phantom of the Opera, the story oozes mystery and intrigue. The suspense builds as the erotic tension increases. Readers are up through Act 2: Ghost Aria and reviewers are a little ahead of them, having finished Act 4: Dark Interlude.

I’m getting responses like this:

“I am hopelessly, and ridiculously addicted to this series.”

”Though this is a serial and it’s highly, highly irritating to have to wait even one moment for the rest of this story, I highly recommend you read it, even if you start when more parts of the story will be out. This is a short read, 48 pages, and will leave you screaming for more. But then again, so do all of her other works, hundreds of pages long, so maybe the serial factor only manages to give us more of that evil waiting, not a higher degree of it.”

“This installment stuff is hard on a reader! ;)”

I love the story, but am getting a little impatient waiting for the rest of it!”

“As frustrated as I am with waiting, when I do get my hands on these Acts, I cherish every moment I have reading them.”

So, it’s an interesting question to me: is the serial more fun for readers or not?

It certainly stretches things out for me. Very often, when my readers get their hands on a book I spent months writing and more months on back-and-forth with editorial, they read it in one night. Not that I don’t love this! It speaks volumes of my wonderful readers that they stay up late to finish reading.

But, with the serial, I’m hearing much more feedback, with more detailed poring over the plot and where the mystery might lead.

I think they’re having fun, too. They might complain to me, but it seems the anticipation for each new installment is creating a fun ride. The story read stretches out over weeks instead of inhaling in one night.

We’ll see how everyone feels in the end!

What do you all think – serial novel thumbs up or spare me?
