Building a New World – Guest blog by author: Christie Palmer
I love being the author of Urban Fantasy/Paranormal I am blessed with the creativity and ability to create worlds and characters that have never been seen before or ever been imagined. It’s amazing, and wonderful and fits into my world of make-believe. Yes, I just used a Mr. Rogers analogy. Remember anything is possible in the land of make-believe. This is where I began creating my worlds, within the fantasies of a child’s mind.
For my debut novel Shadow Play, the setting might be in Montana. But it is worlds apart from the small town that the mortal eye would see, it is what lies beyond the realm of the mortal eye that makes any fantasy/paranormal believable. Those things that go bump in the night? The unexplained is what a writer thrives on. Imagine yourself on a dark corner the only light the street lamp shining over you, creating a halo of light and safety around you. That darkness the light is pushing back? The unknown? That is where a writer lives, where the unbelievable and imaginative mind lives. That is where I create my worlds.
Creating a new world and realm can be as easy or as difficult as you want it to be. You can create a world that has similarities to our world. Or create something from scratch with your own language your own creatures or world unto its self.
I love to create worlds that are within our own realm of existence. For example, taking mythology and bending it to my own will. By bending our own reality you have the basis of a world and you can fill in the blanks.
I have taken Druids, and made them a current day people. I have added Elements to the Druid history. But in my world I have six elements, Earth, Air, Water, Fire, Darkness, and Light.
In my world Atlantis was a true place, housing all the great Gods and mysterious of the world. There are hundreds if not thousands of blanks you can fill in when you just put those two ideas in front of me.
Basically all it takes is a basis in reality and an imagination that will fill in the blanks. So in a nutshell, for me, building new worlds is like a crazy Mad Libs game. And who didn’t love those?
So turn out the lights and stare into the darkness and build a world and create a history and mythology. Then write…
Who am I?This is a tough question to answer, it would be cliché’ to say: "I'm whoever you want me to be." (Wink, wink)However, the bare facts are, I'm a mother of 2, a wife of almost 20 years, a daughter, sister, friend, loud obnoxious cubical partner. (Seriously, we aren't meant to be stuck together, in tiny boxes like this.)I have a B.S. Degree in Information Technology. And I want nothing more in the world than to be a published author of Urban Fantasy Romance.I was born and raised in a suburb of Salt Lake City, UT. called West Jordan. Where I live, about 2 miles from the home I grew up in. World traveler I am not.I currently work a full time day job as a Business Analyst which is a fancy term for I work on a computer all day. (boooo, this technical stuff makes my muse cry). Nuff said. One day I will be a full time writer. Until then, I shall slog along at my day job.So if I'm not working the day job or writing. You will find me reading, which is my greatest past time. Unless, my family has kidnapped me! Taken me out of my comfort zone! Away from running water, and a flushing toilet, away from electricity and God forbid Wi-Fi. (It makes no sense to want leave the city!! There are things outside of the city that can kill, and eat you. NO thanks.) Camping, they’ve taken me camping….. (sniff sniff).Or you might find me cycling, which is my new hobby, even though I tend to crash a lot! My husband calls me crash, but I love it. When I cycle I feel free, my brain and all my characters are quiet, and I can think. After 20 miles or so I am able to internalize my next moves not only in life but in writing as well. I am a true believe that everyone needs this type of release. You just have to find what that release is for you.I obsessively stalk Twitter, Facebook, and lurk in Yahoo groups rarely making comments. I’m working on that part, wish me luck.I love music and if I am I ever seen without my iPhone I have been kidnapped by aliens and every action should be taken to retrieve the real me.What if they don’t have running water, flushing toilets, electricity or…say it isn’t possible Wi-Fi in space??

Most people don't travel to another universe to get a new job, house and boyfriend but psychic investigator Caitlin Diggs did.
Now she's living the life of her alternate self, working for the FBI's Preternatural Division where her first case just happens to include chasing a genetically engineered man hell bent on stealing souls. Well, there had to be consequences.

A day in the life of Caitlin Diggs… (before the parallel universe).
I always start the day squinting into my bathroom mirror. It’s been a ritual of my 30’s and each day I don’t uncover a new wrinkle or line is equivalent to the delicious sensation of biting into a chocolate chip cookie. Well, almost. I discover and uncover things, mostly people, for a living. My career path is rocky and winding, including a long stint as a Special Agent for the FBI. Now I’ve shifted careers into the private sector as a PI. I’ve also traded homes, leaving Manassas, Virginia for Salem, Massachusetts – a bewitching town if there ever was one.
I hope that sensation, the thrill of stopping a killer, will return in my new line of work. So far, the clients aren’t exactly pounding down the door but I’ve had one strange man solicit my services. It involves a case the local PD can’t crack.
As I continue standing in front of my mirror, the beginning of all my days lately, I look really hard into my sapphire eyes and try to decode the change I recently experienced. It happened after encountering an artifact. It gave me telepathy and telekinesis. The kind of gifts you don’t give as stocking stuffers at the FBI Christmas parties. It was the very thing that made me quit the Bureau because I can’t expect their protocols to fit my new and unexpected, alternate life style.
You would think a person who recently acquired abilities would be less concerned about crow’s feet or gaining a pound or two. In truth, I still consider the more simple things of life as most precious. I love my adorable Tonkinese cat, Celeste. She has the prettiest blue eyes and sweetest disposition until her Alpha senses kick in. In a way, she’s kind of like me because we both have soft underbellies beneath our hard veneers, the two sides usually competing for dominance. I actually used to practice leering so I could intimidate suspects. It comes automatically now so it’s one more thing I can check off my ‘to do’ list.
So is it weird I see some of myself in my cat? I guess I rely on Celeste as a crutch because I’ve left my sister behind in DC. I miss her although she can drive me crazy. I am career-oriented where she is couch-oriented. She is lucky she doesn’t live for the precarious types of thrills I seek.
Avoiding sugar for breakfast is another major plus. Celeste usually mewls at this point either in sympathy, adulation or just plain hunger. She loves salmon and I’m happy to provide for her.
After her feeding, I usually experience a knock on my door from the next door Wiccan, Briana McFadden. She talks shop about the locals and I listen because I am an inquisitive investigator, not some nosy, gossiper. I hope I’ve made myself clear.
Well, time to get down to work. Celeste is fed and Briana is off to the shops to buy herbs and all things holistic. I start surfing the Internet, looking for job leads. I ignore my sister Tara’s email urging me to improve my fashion sense. I am quite certain dressing in Earth tones is a fashion sense somewhere on this planet.
I answer my phone and it’s a call from my old friend Det. Stanford Carter. He needs my help to chase something he believes might be paranormal. He is the one of the few people I’ve taken into confidence. He is aware of my abilities and he thinks they might aid in the man hunt – or should I say demon hunt. I am yet to learn - despite my psychic ability - that this chase will literally change my universe and my usual routine will rarely involve staring into a mirror because in an altered reality I will meet my doppelganger and she will act as a living reflection of who I am.

CAITLIN'S HAPHAZARD JOURNAL FROM THE ALTERED UNIVERSE:
* Don't fight the preternaturals with conventional weapons. Use your wits and paranormal abilities if available.
* It's hard to date in a parallel world. Some will see you as your other self. Being social in an alt world is tricky.
* So far I trust the Witch and Mage, but the Incubus is another story. How can you trust someone with such a sexual appetite?
* Enjoying the upgrades. Yes, my home and car are classier along with my wardrobe.
* Fearing the supernatural shoe will drop. Yes, the super demon is on my mind.
* Enjoying the entertainment. A singing mage keeps demon urges at bay. But not everyone is singing her tune. I've got to protect her.
*How will I get home? I may have to plan for an extended stay in this universe. My new boss seems attracted to me but he thinks I'm the 'other' Caitlin.
*Warning: be careful of portals. They can be everywhere. Even in New Jersey.
